Norma's Story
Life
Since I graduated from Ontario High School in 1971, I attended Treasure Valley Community College. I earned an Associate of Arts degree there in 1973. I transferred to Eastern Oregon State College (now Eastern Oregon University) where I earned a Bachelors in Science, Secondary Education degree in 1975. I worked as a substitute teacher in the Ontario area until 1976. I took a full time teaching job in Ukiah, Oregon (up in the top of the Blue Mountains, tiny town of about 250 people) and worked for two years. I took a 12 year hiatus from full-time teaching to be a mom to 3 daughters. I am back to work at Ukiah School District, where I teach all the students from grades 6 - 12 all of their Language Arts classes. It is the best job in the...Expand for more
world, I think. I completed work for a Masters degree in 1998.
I am still married to the same guy I fell in love with in 1979. We own a small business in Ukiah, and he is the Mayor here. I keep busy being a volunteer with the Ukiah Quick Response Team, a medical group that helps people who have injuries, illnesses or accidents. We are an hour from any hospital or other emergency room, so our Response Team is sometimes critical to survival.
I am a co-director of the Oregon Writing Project at Eastern Oregon University. I am a Scoring Director for the Oregon Department of Education, helping with reading mandated writing assessments for all pubic schools.
I like to quilt, grow flowers, read, learn new hobbies, and play with our grandson.
