Norma's Story

Life Married Jim McKay in May 1971, and we were married for 45 years. Jim graduated from Lowrey High School in 1969 also. Took time off work to have my only daughter, Christy. Went back to work when Chris was 9 months old and have been working ever since. I was a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), Oakland County Chapter, and was selected as Secretary of the Year (SOTY )in 1991. Took flight training at Oakland County Airport, Tradewinds Aviation, and soloed in August 1995. Never completed my cross country trip, so am still at student pilot status. One of these days I'll get back into flying. Have two beautiful grandchildren, Bryce who was born on September 22, 1999 and Brynn born on August 19, 2003. I lived in Dearborn Hgts during my school days. Moved to Taylor when I married in 1971, then to West Bloomfield, then Milford, MI from 1992-2006; moved to Fowlerville, MI end of Sep 2006. I have a second home on Long Lake in Hale, MI where I love to spend vacations and weekends. Started Temperature Services, in March 1983. Located now at I-96 Service Drive and Newburgh Rds. His brothers now own TSI. Have kept in touch with Cathy (Adams) Skora, Cheryl (Church) Baron and Lori (Kubochi) Henning on a regular basis. Also Carol (Creelman) Radke and a few others. After a year of being sick and on dialysis 3x a week, I gave my husband a kidney on 7/25/08. I was able to give him 7 1/2 more years until he passed in February 2016. I want to encourage everyone to be a donor and put this on the back of your driver's license. You may not realize how important this is until you or a loved one need help. Thanks. Would like to see more classmates listed on this website to see what they've been up to for the past 48 years! School The things I remember most about high school are all the Business classes I took, the activities associated with the Future Secretaries Club, the FSC's float, Adam 12, won first place and Mr. Davis' support. Most unusual teacher...Mr. Saltinski (Biology) who could forget him. College After high school graduation, I went to Western Michigan for one year. Came ...Expand for more
back and worked at the Inkster Police Department. This had also been my co-op job during high school (Inkster City Hall, City Assessor and Parks & Rec). Attained my ABA from Oakland Community College and my BBA in Management from Walsh College in 1994 while working full time. At Western (69-70), I remember Psychology class where we each had to train a white rat. Interesting how they were trying to train us at the same time. If you didn't pass a weekly quiz, you had to work in a make-up test that week if you wanted to pass. Made you learn the material the first time. I remember seeing the Fifth Dimension concert and Credence Clearwater Revival perform. Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Waters was popular then. The music of the time is what often brings the memories back. Had a car with me even though I was a freshman so I could get back and forth on weekends. One snowy, slushy day, I ended up in the I-94 median when trying to get home in bad weather. There were parties, and psychodelic lights and music, and more that I can't talk about here. Attending Walsh was a whole different ballgame working full time and taking two and three classes at a time to get my degree. But it worth the time in the long run. Workplace Hired in at Kenyon & Eckhardt Advertising 9/25/72 (Chris was 9 months old). Worked there is an administrative support capacity until 12/26/84. Changed jobs to D'Arcy MacManus Masius Advertising which changed names several times while I was there. Began as Admin Asst in the New Business Dept. Transferred to Corporate IT department in May 1988 and worked my way up to Resource Services Manager with four direct reports. Managed a $20 mil (Troy and NY) IT budget and managed the department's HR, Purchasing, global software agreements, equipment leasing, asset mgmt and PeopleSoft developer support areas. Left there in Nov 2005. Since then I've worked at Gage Products in Ferndale, Lear Corporation in Southfield, and Ferguson Electric in Waterford. June 2016 Still working with my daughter, Christy, at her Medical Billing Services company. We work out of her home, and I get to see my grandkids every day!
