Ora's Story
After High School, I had a rocky start. I dropped out of college to take care of my sister while my mother and father were in the hospital for breast cancer and a heart attack. I worked part time at a lounge for a year or so. I went to work for the government at the Military Personnel Record Center for about 5 years. Even though I was attending college at night, getting promoted was difficult if you did not have a military background, so I joined the US Army. I was stationed in Heilbronn Germany for a couple of years and I met my husband while on active duty.
I am the mother of three children, but one was killed in a car accident. My daughter and her husband blessed our family with a boy and a girl. My son was married 17 April 2010. My husband retired from the military and currently works for the Air Force at Shriver AFB here in Colorado. I retired, after 25 years of civilian service, three years ago. attending Colorado College.
Our family has been fortunate to live in Heilbronn, Bad Tolz, and Berlin Germany. We also lived in Naples Italy, San Antonio Texas, and Ayer Massachusetts before retiring here in Fountain Colorado. This is one of the reasons I have only attended one of our class reunions. I was always out of the loop because of our assignments. It was great seeing old friends at our class reunion, but my memory is poor, and I didn't recognize many of the people there. With no name tags, putting a face with a name was difficult.
Living here in Colorado is great. Although, Fountain's population is growing, it still feels like a small town. In Colorado there is lots of open space for hiking, rafting, biking, camping, fishing, hunting, skiing, and enjoying nature. The mountains are breath taking. It is one of the healthiest places to live in the United States. I still try to get back to East St Louis once a year for our family reunion the last weekend in June. Colorado is the closest we have been to home since 1972. So, I hope to see more of you soon.
