Betty 's Story

Unbelievable that so much time jas flown by.... After Soquel I attended Cabrillo and some UCSC and then went to work and got married, had a son in 1968. Worked as a property management person, legal secretary and then in 1970 I opened a Children's clothing and toy store (remember the PURPLE TURTLE in the COOPERHOUSE?) also a basketshop, cardshop, music box shop, and a bakery and deli in COOPERHOUSE. Finally in '76 after a divorce and near nervous breakdown, I sold it all and ran away from home. I worked in Las Vegas as Executive Secretary to the General Manager of MGM Grand and then my son and I wanted to travel so in 1977 I got a "temporary" job as a Flight Attendant for Hughes Airwest (where I met my Husband in 1978 and married in 1980, a Pilot of course, who else do FAs meet? ) After two mergers (Republic and then NorthWest) and almost thirty years I recently retired from Northwest Airlines. Along the way I became a Teamster Vice-President in Detroit and helped "fire" Jimmy Hoffa Jr. I never saw myself as a Union activist, but it was amazing what a few dedicated people can accomplish. My husband went through one last merger with Delta, and then retired Jan '11...since we were both flying so much and we both did a lot of union work, we figure we've only really been married about half of our 31 years....we are trying to get to know the new us...if you've retired, you know what I mean.... :0) :0) We commute between Lake Tapps. WA (South of Seattle) and Rancho Mirage CA. I have an incredibly talented son who is 40 (!) now and other than my old body giving out on me for all my past abuses, Life is Good. e last 50 or so years, I have kept in close friendship with Michele Skriba Rousch, Sheri Hosmer Berman and Mark Yori. One of our mostest fun trips was a cruise with about with 20 Santa Cruz people, including Mark, that we took to Alaska! SO much fun..My sister Jorg ended up married to my friend Jim Skinner...a small world! My sister Mary remarried to a great guy, Dave Mello, and between them they have six kids...they still live in Scotts Valley.. I have recently reconnected with many friends from Capitola elementary school and SC and Soquel HS...it's been fun, especially watching Mike Pine fish...I also have really enjoyed getting to know Christine Frandsen again....I have loved hearing from "old" friends...Max, John, And so many other people I thought I'd lost... I'm looking forward to our 50th... My long time friend Marge McCown Sletten passed away last year and I miss here every day.... Along the way we learned hangliding;skateboarding; skiing, rollarblading and of course DANCE.. I was in many musical comedies at Cabrilllo and Staircaise, worked at the SJC Light Opera and took classes from ACT in SFO, and anything that was available in Las Vegas. My son Chris has an BA in Drama From UW of Wash. and continues to sing with his band and pay the bills by being a computer(MAC) whiz. He also does voice-overs and is a main character on "HALO". The three of us have been lucky enough to see the world together and Owen and I have many many travel plans in our future, along with friends and family!! We have been very lucky, worked hard and now are just starting to slow down.......MAYBE!!
