Owen's Story
Life
After high school, went into US Navy Submarine Force, serving on 8 different subs and two shore duty tours in Hawaii between 1959 and 1982, when I retired as a Master Chief Fire Control Technician. Married a beautiful Hawaiian hula dancer, Pearl, and we raised 3 kids, 2 boys and a girl. Pearl passed away in 1996. I attended the 40th class of 1959 reunion (my first ever) in 1999, where I remet classmate Patricia McDonald, who in 1959 lived 5 houses away from me. We communicated via mail, then email, and then IMing for many months, and I finally married her one year to the day after the reunion. We now together have 14 grandkids, her 8 and my 6. We had a "traditional" Irish themed wedding at the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido.
We spent about 4 years in our first Escondido home in the Country Club area of Escondido, then moved to Kingman, AZ in 2004, to accompany her 80+ year old parents. After two horrible years of wind and fine blowing dust, we were able to move back to Escondido, where we purchased another Country Club home, a "fixer-upper". After the death of both of Patty's parents, we again moved to the house Patty had bought for them, above the now defunct Escondido Country Club golf course.
After the Navy, I became a Federal Civil service employee, working at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA as an electronics worker and a nuclear qualified electrician from 1982 until 1996. Mare Island was closed due to base closure, so I went to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento as an electronics mechanic, working on ground approach radars until base closure got ...Expand for more
it in 2000. I then worked at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego as an electronics mechanic on aircraft interior communications equipment until my retirement in Jan 2004.
Patty and I both worked on the reunion committee for our 45thand 50th reunions, . My lifelong hobbies include fishing, woodworking, photograpy, and genealogy.
Please contact me at the first initials of my name, Owen R. Mccoy, (orm)then add my nickname, Mac. I use AOL.
September 2017 update: We still enjoy our friendships with our class of 1959. We meet for dinner dates on the 4th thursday of each month at various restaurants in Escondido. Anyone interested in attending one of these when you are back at home in Escondido, please let me know at the above email address.
2020 Update. Patty and I have been home quarantining since March 11th. I am 78, have had diabetes for 28 years, and have type A+ blood... three strikes against Covid. As a class of '59 reunion committee member, I keep track of those who have passed away ahead of us. The toll now stands at 93 of our classmates, and we still have many we have not been able to locate. We hope to ride out this virus until a vaccine becomes available and effective, so we can return to monthly and yearly class meetings and reunions.
December 2023 update: Class members who have passed on now stands at 107. Patty sews quilts for Project LINUS, a charity that gives quilts to traumatized kids; she has donated over 560 quilts so far. I have joined the United States Submarine Veterans organizatiion and am active in the SCAMP Base here in Escondido.
