PATRICIA PARNELL:

CLASS OF 1960
Hickory, NC

PATRICIA's Story

After graduating from St. Stephen's in 1960, I went to work as the secretary for the City Engineer in Hickory, N.C. The following year, I married Roger Covert, who was a radio announcer for WNNC in Newton. We lived in Newton until 1965 when we headed west to look for a new life. We wound up in Colorado where I had relatives and lived there until 1968. I worked as the secretary for a finance company. Roger had attended an office machine repair school in New York for the first 3 months after we moved to Colorado. When he graduated, he went to work for Remington Rand office machines and worked there until we left in 1968 when he was promoted to the Manager of the Santa Clara, CA Remington Office. I was pregnant when we moved with twins. Unfortunately, they were born early and only survived for a day. The next year our oldest son, Drew, was born in 1969 and our youngest son ,Tim, in 1972. We moved back to Denver in 1973, as we did not want to raise our children in California. Roger remained with Remington for quite a while and wound up going into partnership with 2 other men in the office machine repair business. He retired in 1999 when he became gravely ill with pulmonary fibrosis and had to retire under disability that year. This was also the year he turned 65 (he was 8 years older than me). We remained in the Denver metro area until 2004 when I retired and we moved to Roswell, New Mexico. During those years as a stay-at-home mom, I attended classes at a cake decorating school in Northglenn, CO. After I had completed all the courses, I had planned to use that as a way to bring in a little income and work at home while my children were young. I very much enjoyed that and had a business for 20 years. A large part of my business was wedding cakes, which were fun and challenging to make. This business became an job when I went back into the work world in 1977. I also during this time attended a ceramics teacher course and taught ceramics part time. My work world resumed in 1977 when I went to work for a private non-profit school for children with developmental disabilities. My youngest son attended at that time (he did , however, start public school when he was 3 and graduated from a local high school at age 21). I started off working as an assistant in a classroom and remained in that position until 1990 when I became the records secretary for that same school. I had worked some summer school programs at our school for several summers and so I "knew the ropes". When the school secretary retired, I was asked to fill that position and I did so until 1997. Our school was under contract with Jefferson County Public Schools all that time, but we were not employees of the school district. In 1997, I started attending some meetings on the creation of a new program for the school district for the 18 to 21 year old students in our county who attended our schools and the high schools in the county. The director of Intervention Services (special education department) asked me if I wanted the position of Administrative Assistant and I accepted. I managed the program of about 100 students in 5 different locations throughout the county. That position was the best job I ever had since I had such a diversity in my work and was also out and about doing things for our teachers, etc. I was officially hired by the school district in 2001 and stayed a total of 7 years until I retired in 2004. I guess the Commercial Arts Award I received upon graduation was for-telling for my future Roger and I had begun to look for places lower in altitude for his health and some place that would be less expensive to live where our retirement dolla...Expand for more
rs would go farther. We settled on Roswell, NM after doing lots of research and many trips to New Mexico. It was indeed a good choice and now has been my home for over 16 years. Retirement was fun the first year, as we bought a house that needed a lot of remodeling and we enjoyed doing that together. In 2006 I went back to work for a local bank and worked another 4 years in their proof department. Everyday was detective work trying to find pennies and dollars that the tellers didn't balance. I quit when Roger started to decline in 2010 because I felt I wanted to stay home with him and spend as much time with him as I could. It was a good choice because he passed away on 12/30/2011. We had celebrated our 50th anniversary in July of that year by going on a cruise in October before he died in December. After his passing, I sold the house in 19 days and bought a mobile home in a senior park and loved it there. I never expected to marry again, but someone came into my life in 2013 that changed my mind so at 69 I married Harley Parnell. I had known him through square dancing with our then spouses, church and Senior Circle. We were married in May of 2013 and have had some good years together. We sold the mobile home in March of 2019 and moved into a senior independent living apartment and loved it. However, after 5 months they sold the complex and we had 60 days to get out. We wound up living with Harley's son, Tim, for a year. (We each have a son with the name of Timothy and they were born the same year.) In September of last year we moved into a 2 bedroom 2 bath luxury apartment complex that we like a great deal. Cooking has always been my love and still is. My cooking style is one that involves lots of prep work and everything is made from scratch. My cake decorating went by the wayside in 2002 when I had to have carpal tunnel surgery, but I still do a little bit of decorating on cupcakes, family birthday cakes, etc. and holiday treats. Travel is my other love and over the years I have done many things from backpacking part of the Appalachian trail, tent camping, travel trailer camping, RV camping, road trips, bus trips, train trips and my favorite - cruising. I have been on 9 cruises and hope to make it to 10 in November of this year. I have been through the Panama Canal twice (once with each husband - Harley was a civil engineer so he very much enjoyed that cruise). My favorite place is Italy and there are several Italian ports on this next cruise. Harley has some mobility issues now so I will be going on this cruise by myself. My sons are both fine men and have done well. At present, my oldest son, Drew is the West Region UPS Freight Dedicated manager. UPS has just sold this part (the freight) of the company to TFI Transport and he will remain in the same position for them. He lives in Moreno Valley, CA with his wife, Cindy and my only grandchild, Abbie. He also does a Christian podcast and blog named Tent-Making Christianity. My youngest son, Tim, lives with 3 other adult men here in Roswell and is a wonderful young man. He seems to always win the hearts of his staff and he enjoys teasing them. It has been a hard year the past year with all the lockdowns. Since his agency has to fall under the guidelines for nursing homes, they weren't allowed to have visitors or go out of the house for most of the year. We now can visit with him outside and take fast food over to have lunch with him. Their lack of contact with the community has set them all back and all of them that had jobs had to quit. Hopefully, things will ease up here as our county has made a lot of progress in lowering our COVID cases.
