Pam's Story

Life I am now the Chair of the OKC Mayor's Committee on Disability Concerns. After more than 30 years in TV news and related jobs, I have retired due to health. Post polio syndrome has set in, and I had a brain aneurysm. Even though retired, I volunteer on the Mayor's Committee, the Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, the Board of Directors of Goodwill, the Statewide Independent Living Council, and several ACOG transit committees. After John Marshall, I went to OU. I worked at KTOK radio, Channel 4, was press secretary in a Governor's campaign, then to Washington DC for two years. Then back to Channels 9 & 5 and 7 in Lawton. I retired from OETA in 2002 after 16 years there as manager of the news department. I was married for four years and am divorced. I live at Superbia Retirement Village. I like volunteer work... especially for people with disabilities. And hearing from old friends. My biggest thrill ever was being inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in April, 2004. School I graduated from John Marshall High School and loved it. I spent all three years going to speech contests and that helped in my career of TV News. Being Pep Club President was one of many highlights in my High School career. My High School honors English was great preparation for Oklahoma University. I still keep up with my best friends from John Marshall and see many friends from my Junior High... Harding. Go Bears! College I attended Oklahoma University and loved it. I majore...Expand for more
d in Speech-Broadcasting with minors in Journalism and Political Science. The Speech internship classes helped me get my jobs at KTOK Radio and KFOR TV. I was Secretary of the Student Congress with other young Oklahomans who went on to enter or cover politics. Kappa Kappa Gamma was a wonderful home for me and, along with Student Congress and Speech courses, provided my best friends. Football games were terrific too. My niece went to OU and I was very proud of that. (Especially since both of her parents went to OSU!) Workplace I am now retired but was thrilled to be inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in April, 2004. I also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from American Women in Radio & Television. I spent 16 years at OETA News from 1986 to 2002. I was Manager of the News and Public Affairs Dept. and got to work on election results and host a program called 'Oklahoma Magazine.' Before that I worked for Social Security, KSWO TV in Lawton, KWTV in OKC, Anchor of the morning and Noon news for KOCO TV in OKC, work as Press Secretary for then-Congressman Wes Watkins, PIO for FEMA, (both in Washington, DC), Press Secretary for Ron Shotts for Governor, Reporter-Anchor for KFOR-TV, and my first full time job was as Reporter-News Anchor at KTOK Radio in OKC. I loved being a member of the news media and working with terrific co-workers and news sources. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is my hero because of what he accomplished with polio. I also got to meet Eleanor Roosevelt.
