Pamela's Story
College
When I attended Friends University in Kansas, I had been going to school on and off in between tours overseas with the Military. I finished up my degree there. I pretty much stayed to myself and had a few friends here and there. My favorite friend was Collette who was an interperter for the deaf. We had a lot of fun. I also really enjoyed my Human Services classes and my Sociology classes. After college, I worked at the Mental Health Center there in Wichita. I left in 99 to move to Montana where I presently work as a Case Manager for Mental Health here in Billings.
Workplace
After I left the military in 1988 I spent one year home with my children. I then began my college and went on and off while I traveled overseas with my family. I went to school in Bitburg Germany for several of my classes. I returned home to the United States and studied the last three years at Friend University in Wichita Kansas. 1998, became a Case Manager Assistant at the Wichita KS Mental Health Center. I worked there 5 months before moving to Billings Montana where I took a possition as PACT team Case Manager. This was a hospital with out walls. We took care of chronically ill patients by delivering medication twice daily and keeping them in the community rather than locked up in a mental institution. This program was started by me and three others for Billings. I worked this job for three years before being beaten by a client. I then moved upstairs to the Intensive Case Management program for the Mental Health Center where it was somewhat more safe for me to work and handle my disability caused by the beating. I have permanant eye damage in my right eye and frequent head aches caused by the blows to my head during the beating. I have been at the center now for almost four years. I have 25 people on my case load at this time. I enjoy my work and wish very much to continue it. My co-workers are wonderful people and the greatest friends to me.
