Pamela's Story

PROBABLY MORE THAN YOU WANT TO KNOW...a brief(!) outline of Pam's life Catching Up on Past History The End of High School Wells College Scholarship Daze Rutgers Honors Rutgers Failure ...or how even a bright, motivated person can be adversely affected by family problems. On My Own First Place 108 French Street, New Brunswick, NJ, 3rd Floor. (October 1985) No More Medical Job Stress (November 1985) Leaving the stresses at Roche Biomedical Labs was hard to do, but very beneficial. The Boyfriend Crisis The truth about Robert comes out Amazing Publishing Industry Success - at age 19 Working for 18 months at John Wiley & Sons publishers in their Customer Service Division was fun. Managing a group of 12, all of whom were older (and some even older than my Mother), was a challenge. Doing it well was a major ego booster. Falling for David How I fell for the man I married...(July 1986) The Medical Insurance Bill¿. or How to Get Married in less than 3 weeks He was a consultant, I was an employee. He paid for his own insurance, I had coverage. It seemed silly for him to continue paying out of pocket, so when we got that bill early in September 1987, we wondered what we were waiting for. No More Wanda & Doc How a simple misunderstanding and my paternal grandfather¿s (¿Doc¿) imminent Alzheimer¿s disease caused me to not be in touch with that part of my family for over 5 years. You Gotta Love What You Do Believing in myself (July 1988) How frustration with my service-oriented career and a knack for computers and writing led to the best decision of my life. Becoming a BUG Short for ¿Beginning UNIX Guru¿...the first week of my technical writing consulting career! The Training Year How I trained 5 of my closest friends (from varied walks of life) to be technical writers. Getting Screwed by Ma Bell Or how we paid 6 people for 9 months on David's salary while AT&T waited to pay us. (September 1990) Homes Sweet Homes Don't buy 4 houses. Ever. Unless you really can afford all of them. Underneath it all¿ On paper and to the outside world, we were doing great. David was somewhat possessive, and jealous of my time with friends. But the 4 houses, cars, and lifestyle seemed wonderful to most onlookers. It was, in ways. In other ways, it just kept getting worse. David would always drink heavily, every night and every weekend. Then he started drinking in the mornings (after Chuck Godshall, our real estate ¿angel¿ who was clearly a replacement father figure to David, screwed us out of $25K and refused to provide all sorts of other assistance he'd promised.) The Beginning of The End Scott, Harris When It's Time to Change, You've Got to Rearrange¿your priorities (May 1992) It got really bad. David would drink constantly, arriving late to work. The hitting started (twice), and I tried to leave. Then we worked in different places and I didn't know how much he was drinking in the morning. It all came apart when he was arrested for drunk driving and refused to get help. Refused, kept drinking, checked himself out of the rehab his mother and I put him in, got himself kicked out of another one (long after I kicked him out of my apartment). He got a bit better, and then would go right back to drinking. Personal Ad Madness (November 1992) I don't wanna be alone any more¿sitting at Karen and Jeff's on a rainy Sunday afternoon, hugging a teddy bear while watching movies as they cuddle on their couch. Reading all the Village Voice ads and the tri-color marking scheme (3 lists) The Wacky 4 * Tom the Security Manager at Liberty Science Center (a list) * Mark the Comic from Avenue U in Brooklyn (b list) * John the Impulsive (a list) * The Lying Jerk (b list) The Yale Comp-Sci Hermit¿or 6 Days of Bliss and The Tragedy of a Lifetime (a list) * The Trip to New Haven (November 24, 1992) * Meeting Richard Morris * The Seduction * The Wonderful Geeky Movie Time * Shopping at Kmart * Thanksgiving of Beef Lentil Stew * Separation Anxiety causes us to stay together¿twice * The Kiss-Off * The Evil Response * The Baggage Problem * My Only Option He Who Toils Below Ground yet Captivates Me¿Entirely (c list¿but the real winner!) * The 6 Hour Phone Call (November 22, 1992) * The 48 Hour+ First Date (bring your toothbrush) (November 30, 1992!) * Meeting at Penn Station * The Fateful Cab Ride * Rotelle A.G. * The Long Train Home * The Tearful Evening * Feeling Human and Special Again * My Hero * The Passing Out Episode * Mr. Heimlich Was Right * The Unbearable Truth * Marvin the Martian * The Commuting * The Ice Storm * Dog Years * The Decision More Recently¿ A Bizarre Tale of Three Cities (February ¿ May 1993) Princeton, Philadelphia and New York ¿ the corridor The Dream of a Lifetime ¿ Moving to NYC! White Collar Criminal Don't trust anyone even remotely like this guy, until after he gets help for his problems. Buying Into the Corporate Myth A brief stint as an employee (!) of Citibank. May-August 1993. Screwed by the IRS, or Selling Out How the IRS came after my salary based on taxes my husband owed. Did they really think that anyone, anywhere could live on $400/month? Retail Excursion Computer temping for Federated Department Stores. Where You Can Smell the Money i...Expand for more
n the Air My life at the New York Stock Exchange, February 1994 through August 1995. There is HOPE¿1994 Jim and I meet the 2600 computer hacker crowd while volunteering to help at their first ever conference, HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth). Training the Rich My friend Jon Wurtzburger and his wife. Our Special New Year's Project First Night New York, December 1994 ¿ December 1997. The Market is Veddy Veddy Good to Me Data Security Auditing for NatWest Markets, December 1995 ¿ August 1996. Then The Market is Fickle How NatWest misinterpreted my resume, and how it caused the end of my time there. Don't Freelance to Unknown Companies How Ignite! caused me financial pain and suffering. The Mom Problem Her Boyfriend, Chris, can¿t take it anymore (September, 1996) Not leaving the house for months Not showering for more than 4 weeks at a time Not helping with anything Encryption R Us CertCo, December 1996 ¿ February 1997 The Grandma Guilt Connection (February ¿ April 1997) The Toe Problem The Surgery Attempts Getting a Real Specialist...in NYC The Clueless Never Sleep A consulting stint at Citibank, May-August 1997. Beyond Frantic HOPE¿1997 How I had the best experience of my life running the best computer hacker conference ever almost single-handedly. Aftermath¿or how I learned¿finally? A brief foray into exhaustion. Learning to ask for help. Watch Out for Vitamin A After being out of touch with David since our divorce was finalized in February of 1996, I get a phone call from my old friend Jim Graham. He¿s also a friend of David¿s sister, Shari. Jim informs me that David has died of complications due to alcoholism. (Jim calls 9/2/97; David died 8/26.) The short version of the story is that David was diagnosed as diabetic in February of 1997, and was told to treat the condition with diet, exercise, and monitoring of his blood sugar. David apparently would do this somewhat successfully, but continued to drink. Over the long Labor Day weekend, he drank himself into a diabetic coma. Someone should have reminded David that his old friend ¿Vitamin A¿ is basically straight sugar. People who supposedly should know tell me that this was at least a fairly peaceful way to die ¿ he probably never knew what was happening and went very quietly. For the full story...just ask me. Right to Die is Hard Two days after finding out about David¿s death, I get a call from my Grandma¿s doctor. He brought her back into the hospital after 4 wonderful months of recovery. The big vein in her leg occludes again, he goes in to operate to clear it, and she has a massive stroke. How my Mom¿s inability to function leaves me as the family member making decisions about Grandma. How enforcing her ¿Right to Die¿ statement is really, really difficult. Fun with the Secret Service 15 minutes of fame, all over the print media, Internet, and even on TV! October 1997. Right to Live is Harder Fighting to keep our apartment, moving Mom out, moving out... Rebuilding Working on a new place, making adjustments to living with Jim¿s Mom... Island Paradise My trip to Maui, January 1998. Betrayal How one of my closest friends really hurt me and caused me to change my social practices. The Chase is On A great consulting gig, January through December 1998. Separation My best woman friend moves to Syracuse for work. April 1998. The Search for Space After 6 months of living with Jim¿s Mom, it is time for our own place again. Looking for big open space in marginal but OK areas of NYC is a lot of work. June 1998. The Amazing Greenpoint Loft! Front row seats for the Macy's fireworks...again! And finally enough space for our stuff...who knew you could have that in NYC? My Second (and short-lived) Marriage April 8, 1999...and by May 30th, it was pretty much over (even after we'd been together for almost 7 years at that point). I guess it was fine for the girlfriend to be the breadwinner, but NOT the wife. Once he almost hit me, I was out the door. Then I found out - he stole 15k from my corporate bank account. It was over. We regained our friendship, fortunately. Nancy's Cousin John What a weird coincidence!
