Hello All! Just noticed this area, so I thought I'd share some of my story ... I married a (former) Viet Nam Green Baret co-worker/supervisor in March of 1970 and we lived in East Meadow for 2 years. During those years we had lots of fun in the Long Beach bays on our boat nearly every weekend, and also camped out a whole lot in New England; Maine and New Hampshire mostly. My bro-in-law lived in northern Vermont, where we visited often and eventually moved to in the Spring of '72. It was Maple Sugering season up there. We were actually planning on moving to Maine...(it was those "live-off-the-land" hippie years), but we stopped off to help him do the "sugaring" in VT. It was FUN but SO MUCH HARD PHYSICAL work!! ...4,000 trees, 2,000 taps and one team of work-horses, gathering by hand! The horses where gorgeous and HUGE, part Clydesdale. My husband did the "boiling" of the sap...THE MOST CRITICAL PART, and I was "the cook" for the CREW of 8 HUNGRY-ASS MEN! I'd spend all morning long cooking stews and two loafs of some kind of homemade breads, and the guys would come in for lunch and in like 6 minutes it was ALL GONE!!!!!! lol! We made 22 barrels of syrup that year, mostly GRADE A, too! We loved it there so much, we stayed! I lived a total of 16 years up there in tho...Expand for more
