Pamela's Story

Life When I first wrote this, Classmates gave us 4,000 characters. Wow. Life, in 4000 characters or less. We've all lived more than 4000 characters. I'm glad to see that now we a have quite a bit more. :-) My first character was High School Outsider/Brainiac. A major shift came about 1/2 way through high school when I joined a church. Musically, I switched from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath to Carter Family, Gid Tanner, and Newgrass Revival. My next character was as Young Elementary School Teacher. While in this character, I also became 25-year-old Homeowner. Granted, it was a very modest home. But hey, I lived in Modesto. It worked. My next character was as Married Girl. (There's a Carter Family song about that...) As Married Girl, I moved from Modesto to San Diego. From Homeowner to Condo Dweller. That was hard. Harder still: The condo complex was poorly built, next to a freeway, and inhabited by some rather unsavory sorts. Married Girl, Condo Dweller, and.... working for entirely the wrong school district for me. I learned important lessons about employer/employee fit in the character of Unhappy Employee. This led to my next character: Mid-life Career Changer. I decided to go to National University rather than a more prestigious university because I wanted my BSCS done, and done fast. Which indirectly led to my next character: Carpal Tunnel Woman. Which, in turn, led to my next character: Teacher of Computer App...Expand for more
s at a vocational school. I loved that job. It didn't pay much, but it was really rewarding. I also liked that it used both sides of my brain. Eventually, I knew I needed an MA. I discovered the Educational Technology program at SDSU, and thus became Working Master's Degree Student. While in my MA program, I started working for QUALCOMM (the technology pioneers, not the stadium named for the technology pioneers). I started at QC as a Training Specialist, teaching ESD Awareness, IC Handling, and all sorts of fun stuff like that. Less than a year later, I was in the Learning Technology department, designing online courses. Next, part of a team evaluating and implementing a new Learning Management System. I guess you could say that new character was Business Process Analyst. December '07 I moved from HR to Technical Publications, but I was more data analyst than writer. I was there over 16 years, so you'd think I'd be out of characters by now. My pretty blue layoff folder gave me the chance to change characters again. And, while pondering "What do I want to be when I grow up this time?" I realized I'd always been happiest while teaching, so that's what I'm doing now. Other characters: I was a Hammered Dulcimer Player and Mountain Dulcimer Dabbler until some arm issues sidelined me. Now I'm an avid gluten free baker and culinary mad scientist. And my spouse... well, I'd need another 40,000 characters to describe him.
