Parker's Story

As I'm approaching 80 it seemed a good time to unload some of my adventures. After DMHS I went to Lycoming College a year and then to Orange Coast Jr College for less than a year. Continuing my reputation as a terrible student, not that many teachers didn't try to straighten me out. I felt I was staying in school to avoid the draft. And that I was running from a responsibility. I joined the Army. Went through Basic, AIT, OCS, jump school, and Special Forces Officer Course. Before going to Vietnam I went through the SF Scuba school. My first assignment was as admin officer at a B detachment. I felt I had not trained for 2 years to sign forms, and volunteered for C&C (which is what everyone now calls MACVSOG). Worked with Vietnamese and Montagnards. Most, I would call friends, and good folks. Going on R&R through our HQ compound, we were attacked. 17 SF died that night, the worst in Special Forces history. Aug, 23, '68. I got some grenade fragments and spent my R&R on a hospital ship. Then I left the service. Worked temp jobs, Englewood Tire about 9 different times. A friend was getting married and I went up to VT for it. Met the sister of the bride. She was on the way to getting her Masters at ...Expand for more
Cornell. We married within a couple years, 40ish years ago. We became(much to our surprise) computer peeps. We had purchased one of the earliest Macintoshes. And due to that we got gigs all around the DC area. For years. We became parents to a wonderful boy. After 8 years of supporting NASA, I was laid off. And got another contract job at Phillip Morris for another 8 years. I didn't feel bad cause contractors at both places usually lasted 3 years. My wife had been raising our son most of this time. Then the doctors finally gave a correct diagnosis. She had MS. She started a support group that recently had grown to 4k folks. And expanded to other chronic illnesses. For the past few years my son and I have been her primary care. For many of those years she tutored from toddler to PHD for almost anything people needed. Sometimes for free.(except organic chemistry, and hates calculus). We rent outside of Richmond, VA. and survive. I seldom post on the internet (and here) except that I do troll some. I apologize that I don't communicate to many of you. But I've learned that I am an ahole, and try to keep that less visible. I do hope that all you DMHS folks are happy, healthy, and get real old. B-)
