Pat ( Mr Mac)'s Story

Pat McDonald-Mr Mac Since leaving Grande Prairie after teaching and coaching countless Ceinah Teams and being Principal of Holy Cross and Vice-Principal of St Joes from 68-88 I have been even more busy I guess. Was Principal of St Matthew Catholic School in Rocky Mountain House until 1998. Although it has been a few years I do hear from a lot of former students most still referring to me as Mr Mac which is OK by me.Following is an update of where I have ben last 20 years. Pat McDonald is the author of “Where the River Brought Them” the official bi-centennial history of Rocky Mountain House. Pat was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia where his ancestors trace back to the 1700’s in Cape Breton. Pat holds three University Degrees in Art, Law and a Master’s Degree in Education. He has always been a teacher of history and since his retirement as a High School Administrator has written extensively on the Fur Trade, Voyageurs, David Thompson, First Nations, Charlotte Small and Pioneer Life. He has contributed many articles to newspapers and is currently authoring a series of historical articles entitled “Our Precious Heritage.” Pat has also written over 50 Human Interest Articles. In 2005, Pat sat on a historic Repatriation Committee to plan the reburial of disrupted remains of twenty-six people who died during the fur trade era, a project that has officially established protocol for future reburials. He has presented his paper “Bringing the Ancestors Home” to Historical Societies, Schools and Aboriginal Groups. In 2007, Pat was the recipient of a prestigious award promoting his...Expand for more
tory in Alberta. In May of 2008, Pat spoke to an international audience of Archaeologists, Historians and Anthropologists in Rocky Mountain House at the International Fur trade Colloquium. In May 2009, Pat was the main speaker at the Alberta Historical Society Annual Banquet speaking on David Thompson and Charlotte Small. He has appeared on the CPAC National Channel, Global Television and Tourism Alberta’ promoting our history, and twice has been a guest speaker at the Grey Coat School in London, England, the school David Thompson attended. In addition - Pat is webmaster for the popular educational website davidthompsonthings.com that has received over 160 thousand visitors from 118 countries. In September, 2010 at Jasper, Pat energized the National Convention of Forestry speaking on David Thompson and Charlotte Small. ** For the sports-minded Pat was the Guest Speaker at the Alberta Provincial AAA Basketball Championships in 2008. In 2009 Pat was inducted into the Alberta High School Basketball Coaching Hall of Fame. In 1988 Pat spent 4 months in China giving clinics and coaching the Harbin Provincial team that eventually won the National Championship of the Peoples Republic of China. He was on assignment for the Alberta Government and the Alberta Basketball Association. Pat lives in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta with his wife Joan a retired teacher. They have three children-Carolyn the CEO of an Educational Service and Training Company, Michael a Law Partner in England with an American Global Law Firm and Bruce the Assistant Deputy Minister for Alberta Housing.
