Pat's Story

Life I lead a small life, but I do it with a certain panache. I Married my best friend, had two children...and after 20 years we divorced. It wasn't my plan, but it worked out best for me. I now have a loiving man in my life and his son. All three kids are in college. All doing very very well. Professionally speaking, I normally teach at-risk preschool children, those that are destined to fail or end up in jail due to less than enviable home circumstances. But right now I'm on medical leave, having undergone two surgeries for brain anuerisms, that came totally out of the blue. So mostly, I'm counting myself among the most blessed, in that I can speak, walk, talk and do almost everything I could before the first anuerism burst. Almost half of those who undergo a burst brain anuerism die immediately, and many more become impaired by stroke or other complication of the surgery. So, I'm blessed, happy...and trying to find my way back to the energy, health and activity level I enjoyed before. To my surprise, I became an ubermother (as my kids would say)when I...Expand for more
had two beautiful and bright children. I fell in love with them and we had the most wonderful adventures as they grew up. Now, with them in college and experiencing that heady time of being almost independently adult, I'm thrilled to be able to share with them some of my adventures and growth experiences that they were too young to hear sooner. I'd alway said that if I had a kid I'd keep it in a bureau drawer -- but I was claimed by them and changed by them into something far better than I was before. The best thing I remember about my life around the year of '72 was the feeling that we really were different. The drugs, music and life styles we chose were completely new and we owned the times like no generation has since. Being vegetarain, wearing my first pair of Earth Shoes, wearing boys levi's because they fit all loose and cool, throwing out the bra, cooking feasts for friends --even the big walk-out we had over the dress code at school...expressions of us, of ME, still stay with me even now. We were genuine, if naiive, and I'm still touched by that.
