Pat's Story
Life
I attended CU in the days when we could hold our liquor. It was a time before kids just fell over dead from a night out. Those were the daysÂ
In 1984, after pretty much burning through all the education capital, I still had no degree but I finally had a major: Fine Art. Instead of wasting any more time in Boulder, I figured I better get smart and go to a Âreal art program. I applied and was accepted into San Francisco Art Institute  arguably one of the best art schools in the world. No kidding. That began my San Francisco days for the next several years of my life. My time living in San Fran had a profound influence on my life and future career. During my time there, to support myself as an artist, I DJÂed at Hamburger MaryÂs, Nine, DV8, and The Stud. I also worked at Bay Area Records and Tapes on Polk.
After hooking up with a super-hot girlfriend, she dragged me to her pad in LA where we spent the next couple of years making the scene and becoming very stupid as one tends to do in LA. After boring myself to death and accelerating my skin cancer, I decided it was time to do something valid. I moved back to Denver to start a business.
Doing art and fashion in LA had made me long for more structure, more logic. Out of boredom, I returned to the University of Colorado to study Electrical Engineering. I was also continuing my artwork while goin...Expand for more
g to school. My classmates thought I was just a weirdo. Of course, they were all, like, twenty so I didnÂt give a crap. I graduated with a BSEE in 1994 and was interviewing all over the country (mostly Southern Cal) for cool jobs where I would combine technology and art and make a whole lot of cash in the tech boom that was just beginning. But I really didnÂt want to work for anyone but myself because I had the idea that I wanted to start my own design firm. I also met a new cute chick named Michelle and she eventually became my wife.
In 1994, I started the firm GOOG Inc. one of DenverÂs first product-driven architectural design-build firms. We specialized in really high-end trendy design and so consequently, we ended up building a lot of the ultra-hip restaurants and nightclubs in Denver. The firm also did projects all over the country. By 2003, I was sick of managing it and so I started a new firm that just had one employee  me. I have been doing design projects ever since. I am now also doing commissioned art projects more and more and sort of returning to my roots as a fine artist again.
Along the way, we had two boys, Jake and Max who are now cooler than the old man. Now, as the boys go to school, play soccer, and baseball, start checking out the babes, and get caught trying to BS the parents, I get to watch the whole process begin again. What a ride!
