Patrice's Story

I finally figured out that I am a writer/editor. I went to college with the intention of becoming a biomedical researcher for the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA after obtaining a MD/PhD from Emory University. Fortunately, I worked in a minority biomedical research program doing research on genetically alter mice with regard to the immune system. I discovered being in a basement with rows of cages full of mice for hours on end is not my cup of tea. More importantly, I was able to change my major to Pan African Studies with an emphasis in Social and Behavioral Science with a minor in biology. I worked on several journals and literary reviews where I discovered my niche in life. I have been published numerous times for poetry, essays, and research papers. I started an organization in college called Hip Hop Think Tank, which is focused on bridging academia and Hip Hop. I have studied the social phenom Hip Hop in conjunction with social order, which lead to speaking at numerous programs, presenting at conferences, and being a guest speaker in the class, ...Expand for more
"The Politics of Hip Hop. Currently, I am enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Master's Program at Cal State University Northridge. I am blending Pan African Studies, Women's Studies, and Political Science. I absolutely hate this program and will be transferring to a master's in journalism program after I take the GRE. My plan is to apply to USC and Stanford University in the fall. My plans are to obtain a master's in journalism with an emphasis in publication/print and then go on to earn a PhD in American Studies, Africana Studies, or Women's Studies. I still haven't figured that out yet. My objectives in life are to obtain my degrees and work in a social movement to uplift and empower the oppressed people of this nation and the African Diaspora. I do not have any kids, Thank you Jesus, and I don't want any. I do not plan to get married either. My "child" will be a movement about the people, for the people, and most importantly, by the people. Political, financial, emotional, spiritual, and physical freedom is my ultimate goal for all people of African descent.
