Patricia's Story

After graduation from high school, I attended ELA City College and went on to study at CSULA. Since I was a W'66 Grad, I started my college days in January, the winter semester. My first summer was spent working for an insurance company in Brentwood as a typist. My second summer (I was a sophomore!), I sold encyclopedias door to door along with other college students. Had a blast and made money too!! For my third summer break, thanks to my uncle, I found myself working in a warehouse making trivets and glass grape clusters. Had a great time there too. I was accumulating a well rounded work education. My fourth summer break ( I was finally a senior!) took me to Pacific Telephone where I started as a Telephone Operator. Little did I know that would be the beginning of my career. I went from a Pre-Med major to a career in business management. Pacific Telephone went through many changes and names during my career with them. I retired in 1998 (SBC) with 29 years of service at the ripe young age 0f 50. I have been married to a wonderful man for 32 plus years. I had one child, a son, at the age of 40. Yes, it was a surprise and a blessing. My son...Expand for more
was 9 when I retired and because I was so active at work, (developed training material and did most of the training for 4 states), I had a little difficulty with retirement during the first months. So, when school started for my son in the fall, I volunteered my services. I still had a management mentality so I kind of took over "things". I continued "volunteering" throughout his high school years. Okay, I was the Band Parents President and The Performance Booster Parents President. But in my defense, we had to raise enough money to buy new band uniforms and I was not going to be sidetracked.. I had to convince the Football Boosters to allow the band to sell our goods during football games. After all, the band played for them and my son was a band member. I think they agreed so they wouldn't .have to see me and listen to me one more time. We did manage to raise the two thirds of the money required. We were told by the Archdiocese that the school would put in the other third. Unfortunately, the uniforms came in the fall after my son graduated.. But, it was okay. After my son graduated, my husband told me I couldn"t volunteer at college. HaHa
