Patricia's Story

I went to B.B.C.I. for three years, grades 10, 11 & 12 from 1971 to 1974. My father was posted back to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1974. I left home, right after we moved back and went to P.E.I. for 1 year, to live with my grandparents. During that year, I spent all of my hard-earned university money (earned working as a cook in the mess kitchens in Borden) on a car. I had to get a job to maintain that habit, so ended up going back home (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) and working for an oil company where I met and married someone. It didn't work out and my parents had warned me, but I was into bucking the system, so did it anyway. It ended in divorce (who isn't these days?), after about 7 years. Fortunately, we did not have any children. After that, I worked 2 jobs at the same time for many years. It is very hard to maintain any sort of a relationship, while doing something like that but I did manage to carry one for almost 18 years---on again, off again sort of thing. Finally, at the age of 48, I met an absolutely wonderful man. I had known him for 21 years. He was married to my stepmother's sister. It's funny how things turn out. Tim was right under my nose all that time and neither one of us knew it. The down side is that I am deemed to be the reason for the breakup of his family. I wasn't, really. He was very unhappy and I gave him the reason he needed to leave. He has 2 girls by his former wife; I still have no ch...Expand for more
ildren and it won't happen now. I own and operate a small business in Halifax. Tim and I bought a boat in Bonaire last year and we sailed it to Halifax (Dartmouth, actually, which is across the harbour). We did that in two stages, one to Jacksonville, Florida and the second from there to Dartmouth. Since then, we like to spend our time working on the boat and sailing. We got really brave and spent a month sailing around the Bahamas this past spring. We plan to retire in 2 years and sail full time. My mother died of cancer, while I was still married. She was only 48. My father has Alzheimer's Disease and is still living with his wife in P.E.I. I have one brother, John and he lives with his wife and daughter in P.E.I. My sister, Heather, has been living in Ottawa for years and my youngest sister, Margaret, lives in Dartmouth, just up the street from Tim and I. John's son, Donald, my nephew, also lives here, in Dartmouth. He is thinking about moving to Edmonton. Will I ever get married again? We don't rule it out, but we may not. Do I have any regrets? Many!! The biggest one is that I didn't work harder in school. I would really like to have another go at it. I think I'd have a better attitude, especially towards math, chemistry, physics and biology.... I went to the B.B.C.I. reunion in 1986 or thereabouts but was not aware of any since then, until recently. Looking forward to the next one. I'll be there.
