Patricia's Story

Life Who Am I I am a sister, a mother, a wife, a aunt, a grandmother and a friend not necessarily in that order and sometime more than one at a time. I am a Multi-Talented African American Woman. I am independent, flexible, strong-willed, self-assured, and compassionate. Who am I , I am a 90's Woman. She played a lot of different roles in many peoples lives; she was a daughter, a mother, a sister, a grandmother, and a friend just to name a few. None of these titles can describe what she really was and that was unforgettable. Whomever she met, she left a great impression on whether it was her knowledge, words of wisdom, or just her smile. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Born, Patricia Ann Nance March 23, 1951 in Gary Indiana to John and Gracie Nance both deceased. The fifth of 10 children. The paternal grand-daughter of a full-blooded Blackfoot Indian. A graduate of West Side High School and ITT-Nancy Taylor Secretarial School. I am the mother of two (2) children, Tonya and Andre, who graduated in 96 with a Bachelor Arts Degree in Computer Sciences from Orlando College. A grandmother of 3 granddaughters , Robyn, Tiana and Tasmine and 1 grandson Austin. After working three years as a Secretary for Wells Fargo, I make a dramatic decision to join the military. A Viet Nam Era Veteran serving eight (8) years in the United States Marine Corps where I went to Basic training in beautiful Parris Island, S.C. the home of the sand flea, from their it's was off to specialty training as a Military Police in Ft. Gordon, Ga. And Military Police Investigative School in Ft. McClellan, Al. My first duty station was Barstow, Ca., later transferring to Headquarters Marine Corp, Okinawa, Japan, and Quantico, Va. where I decided to make another detour . This is where I decided to continue in my police field in civilian life by becoming a Corrections Officer. In August 1985 , I started work with the D.C. Department of Corrections working in Medium Security at L...Expand for more
orton's Occouquan Facility. My first day on the job one of the inmates was stabbed to death no more than 2 feet from me. My first thought was what have I got myself into. Now here's where I take a sharp turn and change lanes and go back to my other life. I joined AT&T on January 18, 1988, making three (3) count them three geographical moves in less than 7 years. I started my career as a Billing Clerk in Billing Operations in Oakton, Va. ,where I processed Billing Contracts and supported the AIC. In 1989, I was promoted and transferred to Treasury , Exceptions Billing , Herndon, Va., as a Reports Clerk where I processed payments the bank couldn't process (no acct. numbers, more than one acct., etc.) in 1990 I moved to Chicago still with Treasury as Field Check Administrator where I processed Cashier functions for remote location. While in Chicago; Treasury consolidated five locations and I moved with my job to Orlando, Fl., and in 1993 I transferred to Morristown, NJ - Tax Service Company as a District Secretary supporting Kathleen Oleinyk and Marlene Shultz. I was a very active member of the Employee Resource Group "The Alliance of Black Telecommunication Employees Inc." where I was the Secretary of both the New Jersey Headquarters Chapter and Orlando Chapter and later the Eastern Region Director. As a member of the Alliance Partners in Education, I was nominated for the 1993 Presidents Volunteer Action Award for which I received an "Honorable Mention from President Bill Clinton for my community service work. I also received a CFO/Treasury Division & District Rainbow award for Outstanding Achievement and Exceptional Performance. After eight years with AT&T I decide to take the buy out in January of 96 and pursue another challenge and another move this time to Suitland, Mqryland. I am currently employed with Dell Services Government Services a Defense contractor. I am also a lifetime member of Blacks In Government where I am Regional Representative for Region XI.
