Patricia's Story

Prepare to here the truth for once. I think that's what this world needs more than anything. After high school I met a young man in the Coast Guard. His name is Andy Carter, Rule High School Class of 1981. I was introduced to him by my current boyfriend. The first time my eyes meet his I new I was in trouble (the good kind). This young man was everything I ever wanted in a partner. Handsome, hard working, intelligent, Bible believing, strong, curtious, innocent, and he SMELLED REALLY GOOD! We hit it off really well and I moved on from my then present boyfriend to Andy. For the next year and a half we wrote to each other, spent countless hours on the phone long distance and saw each other as much as possible with him being in the military. We married on December 14th, 1986 and struggled with it because I tried to stay here in Knoxville to finish school (Knoxville Business College). After six months of being a new wife not living with her husband I decided "the heck with this" and moved near his station in Hickman KY. He was at a station that worked on the Mississippi River. Well, low and behold after living together only a month I got pregnant with my first child William. I soon got homesick because I still was alone most of the time. Everytime Andy was in town, he ended up having to stand nightwatch and then was gone the next morning on another mission. I told him I wasn't happy being alone all the time and moved back home. I asked him to finish out his commitment to the Coast Guard and give it up. He did even though he loved it. Well, 6 months after William was born, I found out I was pregnant again. (Yes, it was Andy's) SHAME ON YOU! I had a little doll named Amanda Haley. We struggled like most poor couples do that come from Lonsdale/Western Heights area. Time and time again we faced hardship after hardship. Ten months after Amanada was ...Expand for more
born I found out I was pregnant again. (Even poor people gotta have some fun every now and then!) Anyway, next Travis was born. Okay we finally figured out what causes pregnancy and my husband "had the little operation done" and that stopped that! Just for a little 411 to everyone, it is the best money you will ever spend. It doesn't change anything except for the pregnancies. Anyhow, we continued to struggle financially but I am proud to say that we never gave up and we never sold out and signed up for any welfare! Fast forward to today. Do we have a lot of worldly possesions? No. Do we drive fancy cars? No. Do we own a mansion? No. I've had to work as hard as any man for many years. It has aged me prematuraly. I smoke. I cuss alot. My hair is salt & pepper in color. (The only thing my daddy ever gave me). I have lost my youthful figure. But, I will tell you what I do have. I have been blessed with three wonderful children who are now grown and healthy. I have the same husband I met in 1985. Do we fight? Yes. Do we make up? Yes. I have a love for dogs, art and books. I have the air in my lungs. I have indoor plumbing, airconditioning, food, water. The list goes on an on. I live in the greatest nation in the world where we can be free and do pretty much anything we want inside the law. My story is not exciting, but it is true. I have a simple life. I have simple tastes. I came from Rule High School in Knoxville, Tennessee where I met and grew up with some of the finest people you could ever meet. Today, I am the Merchandising Manager for a chain of AS SEEN ON TV stores located in 3 different states. I get to travel and do a lot of decision making for our company. If I were to die right now I would be satisfied that life is worth living and people are worth loving. God bless you all forever and allways. Patricia (Shepard) Carter
