More about Patricia:"I became a teacher for a couple of reasons: I really enjoy talking about things and a couple of really great teachers in high school and college.
One fond memory during my freshman year in high school. At that time, Typing was so essential and my dad and...Expand for more
mom insisted that be my elective during my freshman year. My teacher, Mrs. Mary McCarthy, made it really quite a class. She made me realize that if it isn't perfect it won't be taken seriously.
One project was a writing a letter to a business or person. Every Friday, Mrs. McCarthy would ask the class, who watched Magnum P.I. It was a favorite show of mine and of course I just loved raising my hand. So for this assigment, I decided to write a letter to Mr. Tom Selleck. I researched and found what seemed to be a reliable address. The letter went out and I waited and waited. (I'm trusting my memory here), but it had to be near the end of the year Mrs. McCarthy came in so elated one morning. She stood in front of the class and read from a card. As she read I noticed the picture on the other side, it was a photo of Tom Selleck. He wrote a personal letter to her saying that one of her students wrote a letter and that she had to be a fanstastic teacher because her student wrote a fantastic fan letter on her behalf. When I did my student teaching, she still remembered that card, though she said it was buried somewhere.
Teaching today seems a little harder. Fewer students have a genuine enthusiasm--I think they're more cynical or maybe social media has taken away the thrill of letter writing. I have shared this story in the past, but no one knows who Tom Selleck or Magnum PI are.".
