Patrick's Story
Life
I Graduated Fall '83 witd BS in CS UW Madison, and went to Ft Lauderdale Florida to work for a Computer company called Gould SEL (formerly Systems Electronics Laboratory) which sold out to Nippon Mining, then Enron Computers before I left. Next I went to Austin Texas, working for Tandem Computers, a really great place to work for, and saw 2 Sabticals and one TOPS trip before it sold out to Compaq Computers. Compaq was less great to work for, but I continued. The stock did well though, so I used it to pay down the house. I live within blocks of work, avoiding all the usual commute time and traffic headaches, but replacing it with suburban neighborhood and city taxes.
Then HP bought Compaq, and we had high expectations, but Compaqs state of mind seems to have stayed. The lastest CEO has however improved the stock again.
Personal time means vacations at Disn...Expand for more
ey world and Universal Studios and playing with my red miniature-poodle Archie. Lessor vacation time means various local theme parks from Sea World, and Six Flags, and Schlitterbahn to exploring central Texas and all it has to offer. Austin has a major music scene, and various festivals, including art and film festivals, and the entertainment that goes with a State Capitol that is also a major univeristy and a high tech business center. Of course high tech work precludes major time to explore these except when business is bad enough to worry about RIFs. Well such is life, and I've been here 17 years now and been missed by every RIF so far.
Instead I keep annual passes to WDW, Universal Studios, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World San Antonio, Silver Dollar City Branson, Schlitterbahn New Braunsfel, and visit often enough to keep me sane, or some facsimile thereof :)
