Patrick's Story

After graduation, I attended Fullerton Jr. College along with classmate Frank Pons, majoring in Police Science. We both transfered to LA State University and graduated in 1972 with a BS in Criminology. I was hired by the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office and was immediately assigned to narcotics prior to attending the academy. After six months of buying drugs, I was then sent to the academy. I also had to work one day in the jail while in the academy, leaving me with one day off a week. We didn't get paid overtime, it was all part of the training to see if we could take the stress. After graduation I was transferred to the Main Jail and worked there for a year. I then decided to lateral to the Fullerton Police Dept. (big mistake) and stayed there for six months before being rehired by the Sheriff's Office. I was assigned to the Wrightwood Resident Post and patrolled a 500 sq mile area with another deputy. Because it was a mountain resort and desert community, I worked search and rescue in the heat, rain and snow. After three years I transferred to the Victorville Station where I worked investigations, traffic enforcement and as an observer in the Sheriff's helicopter. I was going to transfer to aviation but decided not to when we had to make a crash landing one day. My wife also said I couldn't transfer after that incident. I was married in 1981, my wife was a letter carrier in Oxnard during the courtship, she was able to transfer to the Wrightwood Post Office two weeks before we married. We have two children, my son just turned 20 and is attending Fullerton Jr. College and will then join the navy after this semester. My daughter is 14 and will be attending high school starting in the next school year. I continued working search and rescue and supervised mounted search unit which I then turned into a mounted patrol unit. I am still an avid horseman and presently have three horses. I was promoted to corporal in 1985 and transferred to the Colorado River Station for fifteen months patroling the river and desert areas. I lived in a 19 foot trailer on the river the whole time, my wife couldn't/wouldn't move because of her postal job. I was then sent back to Victorville to work a project which lasted 17 months and I was then promoted to sergeant in 1988. I worked in the City of Hesperia for 8 years supervising the patrol operation, K-9, Detective Division, Community Affairs and various administrative assignments. I also had the opportunity to be on the tv program COPS. I was later given my own command in Phelan where I worked there for three years and then transferred to the Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center (fancy title for a jail). I worked at GHRC for four years as a watch commander and retired in March of 2009 after 35 years with the department. I retired with no health problems and I now volunteer my time at a hospital working with the terminally ill. I also volunteer at the American Cancer Society and US Forest Service in the Angeles Forest...Expand for more
. I kept in touch with fellow classmate Bob Kowalski (voted class clown), he passed away in 2007 from cancer in Las Vegas. For those of you who remember him, he kept that great sense of humor even during his illness. My hobbies have changed some over the years, my wife and I skied in Tahoe for a week each year for 14 years. I'm an avid shooter and gun collector, I also assisted in writing a book about the San Bernardino Sheriff's Dept. I collected badges, law enforcement patches and law enforcement hats. I love horseback riding and camping in the back county reparing fenceline and maintaining the old log cabins for the Forest Service. My wife and I have done some traveling, 2 months after I retired we took a 2 week cruise to Alaska. We have a camper and we use that for trips to Yellowstone and whatever strikes our fancy. It's 2019 now and I guess I should update what I have been doing. I have been married for 38 years and we just celebrated our anniversary at our cabin in the small town of Cascade in Idaho. My grandfather was a cowboy there in 1905 before moving to Calif. I got so fed up with Calif. that I bought a log cabin near Cascade Lake, just a 10 minute walk from the cabin. My wife and I now kayak and canoe, I also fish. Fishing is somewhat boring but relaxing. I have only one neighbor and they are a great couple. We go back and forth visiting friends between Calif and Idaho. Brian Reed a fellow classmate was a neighbor in Pinon Hills, Calif. We had coffee or breakfast 3 or 4 days a week with others, there were 4 of us that met. Within two months of each other, Brian moved to Arizona, I bought a place in Idaho, the two others went to Montana and Wyoming. So, now we visit each other and continue the coffee tradition. My son is 28 years old and daughter is 22. Son is married and out on his own and my daughter is still at home going to college. Sold all of my horses because it is too dangerous to ride in the area anymore. There is so much traffic since they widened the roads that you can't get across the streets and it's too boring to ride near my house. Still trying to figure out if I will get another horse, I still have my corals and arena. I have more freedom now without the horses but, I still get a tear in my eye when seeing the empty corrals. I keep in contact with Craig Carlson, Dennis Curley, Doug Jones and others and have lunch with them every so often. Still talk to Debbie Ragsdale who lives in Rancho Cucamonga and Peggy Waller. I am just about done with the rebuilding of a 1968 Ford Bronco, I only have to put the carpet and the seats in and then I'm all done. I will take it to Idaho and leave it there for the winters. Had 11 feet of snow this last winter, but roads were open and had no problem getting to the cabin. Southern Calif. would come to a standstill with that kind of snow. I hope everything is going good for all my fellow classmates and their families. I'm finding that retirement is still fun and interesting
