Patrick's Story

College There's too much to mention from that single year. But, we've got highlights! (sorry, Bernie) - nude swim in the Huron river - speeding ticket driving across the diag - my first apartment - hacking the room phone system - Oh, I'm a Truck Drivin' man! - Terry. - Lynn. - Barb. - Karen - Macintoshes really suck - Is that calc teacher really speaking english? - My automatic paper writing program that automatically generated what my black studies teachers told me had to be the 'worst example of writing she'd ever seen and was I even literate?'. Really should have read what the computer generated before I turned it in. - learning to eat with chopsticks - carrying my new (ok, used) desk 8 blocks on my back to my new apt - learning to make pretzels and bagels (hint: boiling water) - IBM360 assembler is nothing like c-basic. - red hot lovers. - real jazz - ethnic dance - river spelunking in a leaky boat yeah, it was a very good year... Workplace After HS I went to U-Mich for a year. During that time I worked about three PT jobs (driver for Physics dept, computer tech in Education dept, computer salesman). After leaving UM I moved to DC and worked selling educational software and computer training. Next I got a job as a computer tech for a local computer services firm. Came back to D-town in 1987 looking to complete school and return to DC. Worked about three places 87-89; software sales and hardware repair, dBase programmer and a really fun 4mo gig as one of those ...Expand for more
shows that comes to a school and does an educational demonstration - I did a robotics show (let me tell you about when I killed R2D2 in front of a crowd of kindergarteners!). In 89 I started work at WSU in the college of nursing as a programmer, then moved to computing center in 91. In 93 I went to Pulte Homes as a programmer, next Compuware, then a robotics firm as a programmer, then an I.T. consulting company in Detroit. At this point I had a 6yr old and was feeling like I wasn't spending enough time with her. So I quit and felt around for a year to decide what I wanted to do. I went around the country for training (spent 2wks in Boston, a week in NY, some time in Dallas and Florida) and while still thinking a colleague at my old job told me about a teaching position at Golightly Career and Technical Center, one of the old 'voc-tech' centers. I served as program manager for the Info-Tech program for three years and really enjoyed it. After that, I started a computer technology training company (Mateoconsulting.com) and have had a modest success at that. Mostly I enjoy the freedom of time; tho I now have a 4yr old son who makes me wonder (sometimes) why I wanted to spend so much time with my kids. :-) Update 1/08 Won Phase I of a US Dept of ED research grant, didn't get Phase II so I fished around and found a sweet programming gig up on Ann Arbor (wow, full circle) at Infor. Still trying to figure out what's next. And now you're caught up. Wasn't that fun?!?
