Patrick's Story

Graduated from Cal State Long Beach after a very fun few years at LBCC. Worked for Rockwell Intl (now Boeing) for 15 years as a technical writer, speach writer, and Company Policy Manager. Married Wilson High grad Dale DaGradi in 1961, spent two years in the Army, returned to work at Rockwell. Visited the northwest on vacation in 1969, fell in love with the wonders up here, went back to Los Angeles and subsequently took a leave of absence from Rockwell a year later, moved north, and purchased a Boat/Fishing Supply/hardware store on San Juan Island in Washington. We live in the Roche Harbor Resort area of San Juan Island, just a quarter-mile from the Canadian Border, and a 2-hour ferry ride from the Washington mainland (Anacortes): get your map out. Clams, oysters, and crab right on our beachfront. San Juan Island is about the size of Catalina Island. Sold the store in 1986, could not quite seem to retire: was a Real Estate Agency Broker/Owner dealing in vacation/retirement waterfront properties for 10 years, retired from real estate and started doing what I love to do most: work on boats: wooden boats. I painted and refinished classic wooden boats and yachts for local and Seattle area "yachtees" for several years - a hobby that grew into another business venture. I ha...Expand for more
ve even refinished boats for two old Poly/LB State College classmates! I retired from the refinishing business, which is now run by my son, and am now rebuilding a wooden 1971 42-foot Grand Banks trawler for our own use. The problem is that you are never done working on a wooden boat! The San Juan Islands are truly a paradise! Raised three outstanding children here, on an island with no fast food joints, no stoplights, and where a handshake makes a deal. Also like to build and sell houses when the economy is right. Occasionally run into old classmates as they vacation here in the San Juan's. Would like to hear from all of you, and would like to see you and "show you the sites" if ever you are in the San Juans! We are easy to find. Boating in Canadian and Alaskan waters is beyond description, as my photos can attest. Many fond memories of Poly/Long Beach days! Still miss the warm beach and warm friends - but not the crowds, traffic, or air quality. Visit Long Beach quite often. If you wish to stay in touch, I would like that. Just leave me a message here on Classmates or email me and I will get back to you! Patrick Military U.S. Army, 1961-1963. 1st Armored Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Served as a G-1 Officer Command Assignments Designator, and as a General's Aide.
