Patrick's Story

After graduating I spent 4 years in the USN as a shipboard electrician. Lived in Scotland for a year and a half. After the Navy I spent a few years custom building Induction Heating/forging equipment in Madison Hgts. For a few years I was with the Air National Guard at Selfridge as an electronics tech. It took a good amount of time to get the six months of electronics schooling. This was three months after I got married. Got married between terms at Lawrence Tech in Southfield (now Lawrence Univeristy where I was learning electronics in night school). I left the wife in Detroit while I concentrated on learning. Basic electronics was six weeks and the equivalent of a year in college. The rest of the time was learning and tearing into different systems. Each 'block' was anywhere from 5 to 10 days from start to finish. A few short months after completion, Michigan's economy tanked and I went federal active duty and was posted to the Mojave Desert for 3.5 years. Here I spent most of my time tearing into various communications and navigation g...Expand for more
ear. Some of the stuff was right out of 'Dick Tracey'. I was working on the F-4 E's and G's 'Wild Weasel' aircraft. In short, I was getting paid to play. The weirder and wackier the malfunctions the more fun it was. One time, upon request, I installed a 'Dick Tracey' communications system for my counterparts in a different aircraft wing down on the flight line for the German Air Force. The pilots were all German, but the aircraft had US markings and were maintained by USAF personnel. After that I was transferred to Oregon where I worked on T-33 aircraft, F4-C and D aircraft. Eventually, we transitioned to F-16 A & B (ADF Air Defense) aircraft. In Oregon we routinely worked both the aircraft and the boxes in the shop. In 1991 I was medically retired which became permanent in 1993 or 1994. For about the last seven years I've been dabbling in oil painting. One painting was a full size (20 x 30 inch) Mona Lisa. Got two daughters. The eldest has a daughter and a son, so got two grand kids. Been married for over 30 years to a fantastic lady.
