Patrick's Story

Life OK, here we go. After graduating from KUHS, I took off to Corvallis and OSU. I, as always ended up getting bored quickly and dropped out for a while, went to OIT, then back to OSU and ended up in Australia for a year in college before graduating in 1987. I learned a ton in college, but as a fairly quiet guy in high school, discovered fun, travel, beer, and great friends (thus grades were less by a long shot; than those I had in high school) I then started a 10 year career in international transportation and ended up managing facilities in Hawaii, Salt Lake City, Denver, and finally Seattle. During this period I got married and quickly discovered that that was a bad plan. Divorce ensued. A little bit wiser and a bit less financially sound, I started a second career as a portfolio manager and advisor at Prudential Securities (Now XXXXX XXXX) , in Seattle. This has proved to be a great life decision and 9 years later, I see myself retiring at this job. I married a great woman in 2001 who grew up in another Falls town, Great Falls, Montana and went to the University of Montana. She retired in 2003 as a Major in the Air Guard and recently retired from a management career at Lucent Technologies. She, in parallel to her military career, had advanced to a senior sales management position. Oh, by the way her name is also Pat(officially Patrick and Patricia). We have a now 7 year old girl and a nearly 5 year old boy. Life is great in Seattle and we expect to...Expand for more
stay here. We live in a home overlooking Lake Sammamish in Bellevue, WA and enjoy the view and quick commute to most city destinations. I As an aside I am amazed how some people from high school are now grand parents. I guess we're just slow starters on the kid thing.... Workplace I am in year fifteen at XXXXX XXXXXand am now a Senior Vice President - Investment Officer. Actually Prudential merged with XXXXX a few years ago so technically I'm old Pru. Everything else is same o same o. Each year it's gotten more rewarding here and even with the down market my business has improved. I have a great but small staff and enjoy not having to worry about managing anything more than myself, assistant, an intern or two and my clients. I spent a long time (9 years or so) managing transportation companies before moving in to finance. It was a career I truly enjoyed for the 1st 5 - 7 years. It allowed me to live in almost every major Northwest City and Hawaii. Unfortunatley, the hours were brutal, the employee responsibility got to be depressing and the pay was not equal to the work. I do not miss it. Today, I am blessed to work less than 40 hours per week and can take a lot of time off with my family. It's kind of the dream job (except for the markets and all the disasters du jour). I have no desire to be in management again. Besides in Financial Services the animals (that being me) get to run the zoo. It's a better deal to remain an animal as far as I see it.
