Patrick's Story

Life Most would remember me by the nickname "Sleepy." In fact, I wish Classmates would allow nicknames because only a handful of people from school ever knew that my name is Patrick. Anyway, a lot of years have passed since school, though it is hard to believe sometimes. Like most of us (I'm sure) work and family entered our lives and those things have a way of making life fly right on by, don't they! For me, I left school and joined the navy to see the world. In 1991, I came back to the Atlanta area and stayed around a few years working for Mindspring. Mindspring (now Earthlink) is now no different than any other ISP (or any other large business). Blah. So what did I do??? I took a break for a year to write a history book (that I still haven't published) and ended up going to work for even larger corporate monsters- Lockheed-Martin and Northrop-Grumman! Life is full of irony... At some point, I hope to move back to the Atlanta area. It's always been home to me. I'm always open to suggestions and opportunities! School "Who was your biggest crush? Which teacher inspired you most? And if you could do it all over again, would you?" All interesting questions. My crushes? I thought Lucinda Sheppard was really sweet (read today's hottie), but she was also taken and outta my league. I got into a fight with my cousin over Christy Owens. I think someone told him I was trying to steal her away from him or something (and I suspect that Christy had something to do with that) but it was all innocent. I liked her, but never considered her as anything more than a friend. A good friendship down the tubes over a "perceived" crush :-) Then there was Tami McWilliams. But she knows about that... If you knew me at all in school, you'd likely think that no teachers inspired me. But you'd be wrong (I was so misunderstood)! Ms. Eifil (sp?) inspired a lot of people and I was no different. Ms. Mote inspired me (because I have always liked Science). They were the only teachers that I ever had in high school that showed any interest in me. As a result, I responded to them. Ms. Mote believed I was bored. So she got me involved in "impact" courses. I had been failing nearly every class (because I rarely went), but began making A's in impact classes (because they were challenging I imagine). That made a difference in my life. Ms. Eifil... she just genuinely cared about her students and was always (nearly anyway) happy to see them. Still is. Would I do it all over again? You bet. I don't believe I lack anything in my life today as a result of my "rebelliousness." I've never had a situation when I slapped myself on...Expand for more
the forehead and said, "man, I wish I had paid more attention in high school!" Workplace After leaving high school and up 'til 1991, I was an Operations Specialist in the navy, specializing in Data Link communications and Anti-Air Warfare. During Desert Storm, I managed the tactical data link in the North Arabian Gulf with over 100 multi-national units participating. I was stationed in Charleston, SC (USS Macdonough); Yokosuka, Japan (USS Reeves and USS Mobile Bay); Mayport, Fl. (USS Mobile Bay); Long Beach, Ca. and Pascagoula, Ms. (USS Princeton). Sent about 5 years in Japan and visited every continent but Antarctica and Australia. Spent a lot of time at sea though and finally had enough of that... I came back to Atlanta from Japan after leaving the navy in 1991 and found work with Dekalb County as a Buyer (buying the parts for the fleet of Police, Fire and Sanitation vehicles mostly). I then went to work for Mindspring as a network engineer in 1996 and soon therefter became manager of the operations center. They were a small regional ISP then and a great company to work for. Everyone loved Mindspring... But in 2000, we merged with Earthlink and the network had grown to nearly 2 million customers. I was burned out and not very thrilled with the changes going on. So I decided to take a sabbatical and write a book on history. I'm still writing (really!) :-) Late in 2000, while on navy reserve duty, I was offered a job with Lockheed-Martin and that is where stayed until October 2007). I currently work for Northrop-Grumman. My title says I am a senior technical trainer or military trainer, but in reality I am either an instructional designer, subject-matter expert or a multimedia designer (depending on the day). In a nutshell, I develop simulations of navy combat systems to train sailors. These days, I'm feeling that the same reasons that led me to leave Mindspring are pressing me to leave the defense industry and move back to Georgia. As soon as I figure out what I can do when I get there, I'll be on my way. That is the next chapter to be written in my life. Military Served in the Navy from 1980-1991. Ships included: USS MacDonough (DDG-39)- Charleston, SC. 1981-1985 USS Reeves (CG-24)- Yokosuka, Japan 1986-1988 USS Princeton (CG-59)- Long Beach, Ca. USS Mobile Bay (CG-53)- Mayport, Fl. and Yokosuka, Japan. Major Deployments: Persian Gulf - 4 or 5 times North Atlantic UNITAS 25 (circ. of South America) Mediterranean / Indian Ocean South Pacific Rate: Operations Specialist (OS) Mostly served as a Track Supervisor, Force Track Coordinator and Tactical Information Coordinator.
