Patrick's Story
I started wanting to be a doc when I was a volunteer at St. Mary's hospital... I guess I was 14 at the time. I worked as an orderly, then as a lab tech, then did college and med school. Followed with internal medicine, then gastroenterology training. I practiced in Corsicana Tx for a couple of years, then moved to Beaumont Tx to practice with a friend. 10 yrs later I escaped HMOs to join the AF... great practice, great opportunities... I love it. I've even done another residency while in the AF (Aerospace Medicine).
In my leisure time I play music: euphonium, cello, and some interesting electronic instruments.
My hero, though it sounds trite, is my Dad, who passed away this year. Having spent 58 years in a loving marriage with my Mom, he was the perfect example of quiet strength and devotion. He'll be missed.
I've moved around quite a bit... lots more during my 18 years with the USAF. I'm currently stationed in Ohio, and have been assigned to Italy, England, Iraq (twice!), and stateside in Virginia. LOTS of time in San Antonio, between all of the AF bases.
Obsession: ...Expand for more
quiet time with my wife, now that we have an empty nest!
Family: Eldest son is 28, serves in the USAF. He's married and has two kids: 4 and 7 months. He and I were deployed near one another for a year in Iraq. He was in Baghdad and I was in Balad. Daughter is in college at Kansas State Univ, majoring in food science.
Favorite teacher from my TJ days: Mr Tolar, who taught physics. I actually met him in an airport some 20 yrs post TJ and told him how important his teaching (Physics) was to me. His enthusiasm was infectious.
Story wizard asks: What happened to your first crush? Don't have full details, but she's probably signed up to classmates somewhere... ask her!
Still dress like I did 20 yrs ago? Not quite... my work wear is color coordinated courtesy of the USAF stylistas. That or scrubs.
My first job was at Raiford Ford, where I got paid $35/day to deliver the bank deposits and pick up license plates. What I remember most about it is that was a ton of money for very little work.
Favorite childhood memory: throwing the football with my Dad in the back yard.
