Patti's Story

I started with the Herlong graduating class of 1961, but met up with some hurdles along the way. We moved to Portola, CA in '54, and I was in a bad bicycle accident, and landed on my head on the pavement. Spent 2 weeks in the hospital in a coma, and had learning challenges for the next 2 years. Had to take 5th and 6th grades over. In '56, my dad died. Mom remarried after a time, and we moved to Susanville. Then back home to Herlong. I finished 9th grade, worked at the local coffee shop, and when I was almost 18, took the GED to go in the service. Surprized to find out my name wasn't Patty Pratt. According to the birth certificate, my legal name is Elizabeth Grace Garner. So, my new adventures upon leaving Herlong with a different name was wrought with interesting changes to say the least. I joined the WAC'S, and flew to Ft. McClellan, AL for basic training and clerical school. With the purpose of finding out what field I was best suited for, as well as feeding my ever-independent spirit, I accomplished what I wanted to do, and it kept me focused and out of unnecessary issues that come with that age group. After five weeks of school, I had to be recycled (long story, bad field mouse; painful rabies series). I didn't mind taking the class over, since I knew the extra time would allow for better typing speed. I received several awards after school, and presented with the honor of being the only one to be assigned to White Sands Missile Range, NM. There, I served as private secretary to the commanding officer of the WAC detachment. She was invited to attend all the activities given for the launching of missiles, with the hope of someday going to the moon. I loved my job, but doubted that we'd ever get to the moon. Ha Ha! As her private secretary, it was necessary for me to be at her side at all times for these momentous...Expand for more
times to take notes. It was an exciting time for this Herlong bumpkin! My priorities were disrupted by a certain Sergeant (Ken Morin), who became an integral part of my life. We were married 2-2-1963 in Collingswood, NJ. He worked as a full-time National Guard, and me at an engineering firm in Camden, NJ. Tumultuous times there, but we had a daughter born in Camden 6-5-65. She turned out to be our only child. We were divorced later, and I returned to Herlong with our 10 month old daughter. Worked on the base in the warehouses, packing modules for shipping to Viet Nam. From there to Susanville, working at Walker's restaurant and going to Lassen college financed by Veterans. I also worked at the dorm filling in as the weekend house-mother. My last employment choice was with State Compensation Insurance Fund in Policy Services, and I retired from there 12-30-2005. My life is very full in volunteer work and family & friends. With just one daughter, I have 3 beautiful grandchildren, and 1 more that came with my daughters 2nd husband. In all, 4 grands, and 6 great-grands .. all beautiful, smart and talented! Oh yeah, and another one due July 9th. Her name is Julieann. The older I get, the more I cherish memories of Portola, Susanville, Janesville, and especially those precious early days in Herlong. Our imaginations were stretched to the point of endless, since that was the basis for our social skills and sole entertainment. Remembering old chants for jumping rope, as well as creating new ones. Jacks and marbles, kick the can... do kids know what that is now? The quarter movie show followed by sitting on the ground under an open window at the church to hear them sing that old time gospel (R&B) Ha ha ha. I feel that life has been very kind to me. My close friends are life-long, trusted, and very dear to my heart.

Mail route stop overs across the United States. Very interesting locations. Most of the markers are still in place.
Late 30's or early 40's. Haven't played in years, but I like the pic.
Great-gramma Patti Elizabeth Jillson and Melody Elizabeth Buchanan.

Brandi and me (Bubba) born 6/16/1988
I rented a room in Herlong for Friday & Saturday night, but may just stay Saturday night. Gotta see those silly lizard races! There's a lot for kids to do, and lots of eats.
