Patty's Story

Life Well, here goes! I think I will back up to childhood. I grew up in the boonies near my grandparents farm. I loved roaming the woods, and riding my pony/horse. My little sister joined the picture when I was 7. I was happy being the only child, but now wouldn't trade her for the world. I attended Forest Hills until 1977, when the flood hit. We moved to Indian Lake, where we owned a small wooded lot. I was NOT happy about moving, or going to a new school. But I endured, and tried my best. For reasons still unknown to me, I was an outcast. I tried to fit in, but never did. My parents were going through a mess, so I was even more unhappy. I do miss water skiing though. After graduation, we moved to Schellsburg. My parents divorced & mom remarried. I attended UPJ for four years starting in engineering and changing to psychology (not too smart). I graduated with a BS (!) degree with two minors. College was a blast...some of it's a blur, but well worth it. I worked at the Ship Hotel during the summers. After college I got involved with an abusive man and had a tough time crawling out of that hole. Took almost three years, but I did it. After college it was hard to find a good job, so I stuck with food service, catering, and bartending until 1988 (and sporatically throughout the years for fun), when I landed my first career position at Children and Youth in Cambria County. I stayed there eight years and hated most of them. My father died in 1989 in a violent car crash in Florida. That was so hard to handle, especially amidst the abuse I was suffering. I think it was the turning point though, and after some serious bereavement counseling, a Manic-Depression diagnosis (Now called Bipolar), I was able to dump the asshole and get on with my life. I decided that I wasn't going to get serious with anyone until I could get myself back on track. I sporatically dated and threw myself into work, family, and shooting (Civil War) blackpowder competitively. I finally learne...Expand for more
d how to snow ski. I went from driving sports cars to my ultimate favorite vehicle; a 4x4 Chevy PickUp. I met the man who would become my husband in 1995. Mom always told me not to meet a man in a bar, but I was bartending in the now crispy remains of the Heritage Inn. I was bartending for some fun and extra spending money. My husband is Keith, a 1983 graduate of North Star. About the same time I met Keith, I was very ill with an unknown cause. I had lost 60 pounds and was sick A LOT! Finally I was correctly diagnosed with Grave's Disease. I underwent radiation therapy and dodged surgery. I regained the weight, and it took two good years to balance my meds, but am well undercontrol now. A job change came in June of 1996 when I finally bagged the Children and Youth gig and went to work for the Department of Welfare, where I still am today (YUK). I finally got married August 1997. We tried for three years to become pregnant, which I never thought I would even have children. When we quit trying I became pregnant. I am now the mother of a beautiful little girl, who never ceases to amaze me. I want to be someone she's proud of, so things have changed. At age 40 I finally realized life is slipping by. SO I am a 44 year old firefighter in training, an EMT, and quite possibly will go back for my Master's degree in the next year or so. We bought an old victorian house in Hooversville, ironically not far from good ole Shanksville. Even more ironically, I was a Responder for Flight 93. We are fixing the house up slow but sure, and dream of a big old farmhouse in the country, with a field of horses. Meanwhile, I am enjoying fixing up my house, reconnecting with Angie, and getting through each day. Trying to keep up with the career, the family, and everything in between; happy I am fairly healthy and hoping that the blasted firewhistle doesn't go off (it's never good news)! I am sure there are things I have missed. It is almost 3 am and I am sleep deprived as it is. :)
