Paul's Story

Life After high school I attended East Los Angeles College after which I enlisted in the Air Force in 1963. In my off time I was a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifying lifeguards, teaching swimming and survival swimming. In 1967 I joined the staff at the Southeast YMCA in Huntington Park where I enjoyed working with young people. Seeking a lifetime ambition of a career in law enforcement I joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1970 and continued my education at Cal State Los Angeles . I worked Hollywood Division for over 20 years where I worked patrol and detectives, and with many of gang members trying to help them get their lives in order. This was one of the most rewarding, as well as one of the most discouraging times of my career. Some gang members were able to leave the gang life and others were not. Even more tragic, some were injured and killed. In 1975 I bought a house in Downey and lived there until 1996, then rented out the house and moved to Burbank. In 1982 I adopted two boys, Bryan, 8 and Jason, 9 years old. Watching them grow was the happiest time in my life. In 1975 I met a girl and although we never married we stayed together for 25 years and had a great relationship. In my younger days I had a great time racing motorcycles off-road in the desert. We would pack up the kids and spend the weekend camping and racing. Those truly were some of the best times. Today, although I don't race any longer, I do off-road. I have had 3 Jeeps in the last 20 years, a '76 & '78 ...Expand for more
CJ7, and currently have a '98 TJ. UPDATE: Several years back I sold all the toys. On February 7, 2004, after 34 years on LAPD I retired. I was thinking, I was never without a job since I was 8 years old (Youngest ever paperboy for the Huntington Park Daily Signal) In 2006 I moved back to my house in Downey where I currently live. In 2008 I joined the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR). The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. They have one thing in common besides motorcycles. They have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America's freedom and security. They don't care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you are a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you are from or what your income is; you don't even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect. Their main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission they undertake has two basic objectives: * Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. * Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protester or group of protesters. To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you. We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.
