Paul Atelsek:

CLASS OF 1974
Potomac, MD

Paul's Story

Life Note: no children were warmed in the making of my picture. After Churchill, I went to the University of Maryland, where I majored in geology. After working a year in the oil patch of Texas and Louisiana, I decided that I was too social to be stranded in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. So I sold my car and took my savings to I backpack around Europe and the Middle East for a year. After that, I settled into a job with the US Geological Survey in Reston, VA. A few years later I went to the University of Georgia to get my masters in Marine Geology. It was in graduate school I met my wife Maureen. We spent lots of time together not working on our theses. After 10 years as a geologist, I decided to change careers and go into environmental law. So I stayed another three years in GA going to law school. I then returned to work in Washington DC for the Department of...Expand for more
Transportation. I wrote auto safety regulations for five years, then started doing environmental law for the US Coast Guard, Afterr nine years there, I shifted over to the Navy Office of General Counsel. As of 2014, I work downtown at the Washington Navy Yard, trying to keep my little piece of the Navy out of trouble with the EPA, and defend them from lawsuits. Since 1995, I've lived in Vienna, VA. I'm a stereotypical yuppie with a wife, two daughters (15 and 18), a rescue mutt, and a minivan. My daughters are both WAY smarter than I was in high school (when the max was a 4.0, right?). I enjoy biking to work, dancing, and summer vacations on the Outer Banks of NC. From the class of '74-75, I keep in touch fairly regularly with Ian Blumgart and Gary Seale. Please feel free to e-mail me if you want to share any recollections of me or things we did together at Churchill
