Paul's Story

After being plucked from my happy, comfortable, and (as I had it figured) well-planned future in Oscoda, MI in 1980, my family moved to Marshall, TX for my senior year in high school. While I didn't understand my parents' reasons for at least the timing of that move at first, I'm starting to come around after almost 30 years. At the very least, that's why there are two high schools in my profile. I graduated from high school in Texas and set about squeezing four years of college into eight (thanks for that creative description go to Christian entertainer Mark Lowry). That's why there are two colleges in my profile. I started out as a commuting student at Kilgore College for about 2 1/2 years, then transferred to The University of Texas at Austin for years of subsequent abuse on my self-esteem and GPA. That's probably not a completely fair reflection on my UT years, as I worked full-time throughout college, but I still like to hold a little of the bitterness in reserve for emergencies like this. I graduated in 1989 with a BBA in Accounting, but I had already been working for EDS for a little over a year by then. And I have NEVER been an Accountant. I spent the first six years of my professional career as a proposal writer for EDS, after dabbling in radio and the music business during college. I thought I had abandoned the writing gig to become a consultant, but it turns out consultants tend to write (and speak) a lot--so, I'm still using my high school typing skills and Mr. Gum's speech coaching all the time. I jumped around from company to company a bit during the 90s (IBM, Tandem/Compaq, and Silicon Graphics) with a bunch of folks who built up professional services teams, and settled at a payment management company called CyberSource (CYBS if you're ever on NASDAQ Jeopardy) in April, 2000. I'm still there today (notwithstanding a little "vacation" I took from 2002-2004-- but that is a very long story), and I like to call what I do "fighting bad guys." What that means is that I promote, market, and sell the services of a group of people that help companies who sell things on the Internet to avoid credit card fraud. We don't track down the criminals and shoot up their hideouts or anything, instead, we tell the merchants to reject their transactions, so that they just don't have to deal with the crooks in the first place. I just think "fighting bad guys" sounds more interesting. I met the girl I married at work. We both worked for two different parts of EDS, and although we didn't know each other or work together on anything, we both asked friends of ours to introduce us. We only knew each other for a few mont...Expand for more
hs before we got married, but we've remained married almost 21 years, now. That's a testament to how understanding and patient one woman can be, I think. We have one son, and we've lived around Austin, Texas, basically all of his life. Pretty strange for a kid (me) who grew up moving about every 3-4 years (and even kind of liking it) (wait, that's three parentheticals in one sentence!). I have to travel a lot for work, so that way, my wife can stay in one place, and I still wind up seeing the world. My frequent flier card says I've gone about 1.3 million miles over the last 15 years or so (but that's just on one airline--what do they know?). I've been to England, the Netherlands, and Panama, but my favorite trip abroad was the week I spent in Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. I'm still more partial to travel within the US, because when I travel abroad I pack like a girl and schlepping around all that luggage really isn't much fun. I've spent a fair amount of time in New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area (several of the companies I've worked for have been headquartered there), Chicago, and Seattle. Oh, and even though I don't really do anything that they built Las Vegas for (like gambling or drinking or watching Carrot Top), I go to a convention of Bad Guy Fighters there once a year, so I've seen more than my share of neon and casino vampires, too. Every so often, my son will travel with me and it is fun to show him around the cities I've come to enjoy. When I'm home (and that's not as often as I'd like), I enjoy working on my old car or other wrecks my car-buddies need help with. I try to help out around my church, whether that means acting in dramas, videotaping the services, or serving iced tea. My wife is one of our church's secretaries, and there is usually something that needs to be done around there. While our son still lives with us, we enjoy spending time with him, either playing video games, watching sarcastic comedy on TV, or having dinner out. I didn't realize I liked talking about myself so much (and for anyone who remembers my ego, I bet you won't believe a word of that). I hope you found all this worth the time it took to read. It is always great to hear from the people I can still remember from school. Once the full-scale memory loss kicks in, I'll probably never reply to messages, but till then, I'll try to respond if you do happen to write me (NOTE: I don't have any illness that causes full-scale memory loss, other than just normal aging, so please don't send me the URL of your favorite Alzheimer's support website). I look forward to finding out if anyone made it this far. Paul
