After graduating from East Providence High School, I attended the University of Rhode Island. In 1967, I graduated with a B.S. in Zoology and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army. After completing my officers branch training, I attended airborne training, Fort Benning, and then the Special Forces Officers Qualification Course, Fort Bragg. Upon completion of the S.F. 'Q' course, I was assigned to the 6th Special Forces Group (Abn) for 3 months before being deployed to the Republic of Viet Nam. My first assignment was as a platoon leader with the 3rd Battalion, 503 PIR, 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade. Later, I served as an adviser to the Vietnamese with 5th Special Forces Group.
