Paul's Story
At the end of my junior year i was denied re-entry to HolyCross by Sister Hilda. When i think back on that i wished it had been me who beaned her with the snow ball!
Well ladies an gents fellow alumni i ended up going to Caesar Rodney which i disliked very much. I had 21 credits already with the 3 classes i had to take in the morning an filled my afternoons with VoTech. After high school i messed around for a couple of yrs (being i wasnt college material) an went into the USAF. I served for 8 years lived in San Antonio, Texas for 6 years an Wiesbaden, Germany for 2 years. I worked as an telephone cable splicer. After i got out, i went to work as a line cook in lewes Delaware for 2 years then in Dover at a few restaurants and then in Wesley College.
I got transferred to Lycoming College in Williamsport Pa in Oct. 1985. Worked there for about 6 months then quit an worked a
Italian restaurants for the next 28 years. During that time i married a woman that already had 4 kids, 3 lived with us for the next 10 years.
In my 10th year of marriage i had to have my right leg amputated because of an infection i had. My wife divorced me because she considered me to be handicapped. I continued to work after i got my prosthetic leg an did so for another 11 years until i had my other leg amputated. During all this time in Pennsylvania i was also drawing as ...Expand for more
a hobby . An started doing commission work drawing people's portraits, families as well as pets. I was doing pretty good making money here an there. Then a friend bought me some watercolors an i was like uhh no, i just do lead. Well after my second amputation i couldnt work in kitchens it was just to dangerous for me. So i went back to drawing but i wasn't getting to much paying work. So i tried the watercolors my friend had bought me a few yrs earlier. Well needless to say my first couple of painting were garbage. So i bought some books an learned how to control the water to paint ratio. An sold a painting i had in a show in a local bank. The person who bought it called me up a couple of days later and asked me to paint a panoramic of Williamsport. I told him that I'd only been painting watercolors for a few months. He said he'd buy it if he liked it an if he didnt it'd be good experience. So i agreed an it took me 6 months to paint it on 4 16x20 watercolor papers . He paid me a thousand dollars for it an I've been hooked on watercolor since. This is my 8th year doing watercolor paintings ive sold over 30 paintings ive had 3 one man shows im in a gallery and i have a patron that got me a studio an pays my rent and all my utilities for the last 4yrs. So for someone who to quote the lyric
"i'm half the man i use to be"
Im doing pretty good lol!!
