Paul's Story

Life 1984 Grandview High School - Graduation 1984-86 Brescia, Italy - Exchange student, bicycle racer 1986-87 Steamboat Springs, Colorado - Colorado Mountain College 1987-1992 Madrid, Spain - Worked in various jobs, bartender, studio photographer, English teacher, until starting as a freelance photographer with the Reuters news agency. In 1989 I started to work full time at Reuters as a freelancer, covering Spain&Portugal as well as a few assignments abroad which included Africa and the Middle East. In 1989 I was married in Madrid, Spain to my now ex-wife. 1992-1995 London, U.K. - Reuters Pictures photographer/sub-editor World Desk. During this period I started to travel more, with assignments in South America, Europe and Asia. responsible for coverage at the Vatican and Pope John Paul II's foreign travels including trips to Tunisia, Bosnia, Lebanon, Egypt, Slovenia, Brazil, Cuba and a few others. Other assignments I was sent on include the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney Australia, the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano Japan, two Tour de France bicycle races, a few Giro d'Italia bicycle races, and the conflict in Israel and Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza. My second daughter Claudia was born in Rome on June 20, 1997. 2001-Present Madrid, Spain - Reuters Pictures, Chief Photographer Spain & Portugal - Stories covered on current assignment include Israeli disengagement from Gaza in 2005, Iraq war (embedded for 5 weeks on the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf at start of war), the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens Greece, The 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake USA, and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino Italy. I was divorced and am currently in a new relationship.
