Paul's Story
Looking back, I think I got my act together in my senior year of high school; before that, I don't think I did 15 minutes of real work in a given week (shout-out to the movie Office Space).
After high school, I went to Tufts University and New England Conservatory of Music for three years; I dropped out of the Conservatory when I realized I would starve as a musician! I got my Tufts degree, took a year off to travel (Europe, Australia, Thailand, New Zealand) and went to medical school (McGill in Montreal).
After a two-year mistake doing general surgery (didn't like pus, feces, and gunshot wounds) I switched to orthopaedics. Along the way, I got married (Denise) and started having kids.
I started out after residency in Washington DC, came partly back to New Jersey (too crowded, expensive, etc) and then went back to DC to a not-very-good job at George Washington University. Good part though: I spent 5 years also doing res...Expand for more
earch on arthritis at the NIH.
In 2006, I had had enough of George Washington University, even though I really liked living in DC, and we moved out to Seattle. I'm on the faculty of the University of Washington where I specialize in hip and knee replacement surgery; I also continue to do research on arthritis and cartilage.
I live with my wife (still Denise!) and three kids (Karl, age 13; Matthew, age 11; and Jessica, age 7) in a nice area just outside Seattle, called Mercer Island. Our neighbors work at places like Microsoft, Boeing, Expedia, and Amazon. When it's not raining, we enjoy hiking, sailing, skiing, and biking. The kids are very busy playing sports which takes up most of my free time. My only real gripe is that it rains too damn much in Seattle - plus it's COLD during the spring.
I'm not sure how the 26 years since New Rochelle passed so quickly, or when I became a grownup. It's been a good trip, though!
