Paul's Story

it's hard to tell my story without acknowledging my drinking was out of control by my junior year at Wagner. I did manage to graduate despite a serious auto accident in my junior year which resulted in some issues which would dog me for 25+ years. I did do well in insurance for 3 years, but drank myself out of a good job in Chicago in 1970. I spent the next 14 years or so on the streets of Chicago, mostly driving a cab. I ended up in a VA hospital in July of 1984 and took my last drink July 26th of that year. I went back to school at the U of Minnesota in 1988 and got my Licensed Alcohol and Drug Certification in 1991. I have been in the Substance Abuse field ever since working in adolescent and than adult in patient settings from 1990 to 1999. I completed my Master's in Counseling and Psychological Services in 1997 and began working with clients that had both chemical and mental health problems at that time. to work there until September of 2011, when I will retire at the age of 70. I remain in good health despite my prodigal son years, thanks to good genes and a vigorous running program in my fifties. I ended up running three marathons, the last one being the New York Marathon a month after I turned 60 in 2002. I don't road race any more but continue to run regularly, tend to my hosta garden, and am currently getting my house ready for sale as I need to began to simplify my life as I get ready for retirement. I find having goals and experiences to aim for essential to keep life interesting, so in several weeks I will be flying out to Colorado to climb Mt. Elbert, the second highest mountain in the lower 48 states . I guess you could say my motto is: "Life isn't over until it's over". There were a number of times when it was only by the grace of God that I survived, so I am humbly grateful for all my experiences and to still be here. I remember all my classmates as Wagner warmly and am glad so many of you have had good lives.
