Paul's Story
Life
Now retired as of January 2024. Prior to that I was the Manager of Environmental Health, Occupational Safety & Risk at Fort Valley State University. in Fort Valley, GA....down near Macon in middle GA.
Before that was the Manager of Environmental Health, Occupational Safety & Risk Management at Dalton, State College in GA, this position was eliminated due to budget cuts as a result of the pandemic. Prior to this we lived in Atlantic City, NJ for a year where I worked at Revel Resort as the Executive Director of Safety. That job was eliminated after the hotel suffered huge financial losses and reorganized after Hurricane Sandy.
Before that we were living in Augusta Ga where I was employed as a Fire Protection Engineer with a contractor at the DOE Savannah River Site for a year.
Prior to that we lived in Smyrna,GA in the NW corner of metro Atlanta, where I was employed with DeKalb County Fire & Rescue, adjoining the City of Atlanta, as Fire Protection Engineer.
I remarried 10/8/05. and I've learned that I'm a G*d D*mn Yankee! I moved south, took a job here and married a southern girl.
If you're going to be in the area, let me know and maybe we can get together for a drink and old times.
School
Oh to be back at McDowell in 1967, when life was simpler. Lots of good times in band, orchestra and yearbook. We didn't realize how good it was until it was too late.
College
Having my parents tell me what to major in wasted several years of my college. Once I figured out where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do made it easier. Having had to pay for my degrees myself also made me appreciate it more. Just wish my mom & dad had been alive to see me earn my degree. Completed my Bachelor of Science in Fire & Safety Engineering Technology at the University of Cincinnati in August 2001 and my Ma...Expand for more
sters of Science in Emergency Management Jacksonville State University (AL) in April 2007
Even was accepted into Omicron Delta Kappa national honor society.
Workplace
I moved back to Erie after 12 years in the Air Force and went back to work at WICU (I worked there part-time in the early 70's) as a news videographer. I covered lots of hard news in those 10 years. Homicides, drug busts, accidents, major alarm fires, but after 10 years it finally burned me out. Today's TV news in not real news, but made up trash (for the most part). From there it was Industrial Safety consulting for a couple of years, not bad, paid the bills, but not my love. Fire Protection is my real love...got smoke in my veins. Will never get rich from it, but you don't do the job to make a fortune. Saving someone's life is all the pay I'll ever need. I've been doing occupational safety now for over 20 years and the job also entails being the fire marshal for my employer. Its not the fire department but it's close enough....since I'm too old to be riding the truck any more.
Military
12 years in the Air Force was great. Loved my job in Fire Protection. Had some great assignments and made some life long friends too. Andrews AFB and Air Force One...what a blast. Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, the Thunderbird's and both the MGM and Hilton Hotel fires...more special memories. Then on to Ft. Fisher AFS on the outer banks of NC and riding out Hurricane Diana (and standing in the 'eye' of the hurricane) in '84. After that 3 years at RAF Chicksands just north of London. Got to see Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards parade and did Ladies Day at Ascot. Me in a top hat and tails...what a hoot! Memories that will stay with me forever. I would have stayed for the full 20, except for family problems. Wouldn't trade those 12 years for anything!
