Paul's Story

Last revised October 2017. Retired Foreign Service officer - did Germany, UK, Sinai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. TDYs to Africa, South America and Afghanistan. I worked for a consulting firm in Northern Virginia with an emphasis on foreign affairs until I was laid off in Feb 2009. Did unemployment and worked a project on Somali piracy and Gaza arms smuggling back in the State Dept. That went until 2013. I then went to work in the Counter Terrorism Bureau at State working on terrorism screening and interdiction, the watch lists and international cooperation. That was from 2013 t0 2015. Fascinating and important work. Since 2015 I have been at State (again!) in the division working on reviewing FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests and e mails. Yes, the e mails that you hear about on the news. That is what I can say. I am resuming this work shortly. I also do document review, newspaper article editing and a number of other things. Married, two children, three cars and one house. My wife Susan works for the Fairfax county Public School system. My son lives with us and works at a comic book store. My daughter and her husband live in DC. My son and I are certified appraisers thanks in large part to a suggestion about this from Michael Harris who is also a certified appriaser. Mike does guns, my son David does comic books and manga and action figures and I do a lot of eclectic things. To those who think comic books what? our first job for a lawyer here involved $14,000.00 worth of items! David has done bigger jobs since; google 'Korea Times David Tyson' for an article he has written for a paper in Seoul. My ...Expand for more
father was in the Army and we moved around so I have signed up at a number of sites in Classmates. I may list myself in places where I did not attend but might have known people in the general, later time range. I also added in Toms River High School Class of 1943 so that people looking for my Mother (who died in 2007) would have a contact point. My apologies if this bothers anyone - I wanted to reach out and get broad contacts. I would particularly like to hear from people who attended or taught at Pemberton Township High School. The basic chronology is: 1955 Private kindergarten Ft Eustis, VA 1956-7 Nuremburg/Fuerth elementary school Germany 1957-8 Mainz Germany elementary school 1958-59 Wakefield Kansas Elementary School 1960 Pemberton Twp New Jersey elementary school 1960-62 Ulm Germany elementary school 1962-3 Munich (Perlacher Forst) elementary and junior high school 1963-4 Newcomb Middle School Pemberton New Jersey 1964-8 Pemberton Township HS Pemberton NJ 1968-72 Dartmouth College, Hanover NH 1972-75 George Washington Univ Law School Wash DC 1983-4 Univ of Wisconsin - Madison Graduate Economics 1998-99 National War College, Washington, DC I entered the Foreign Service in 1974 and retired in 2003. I served in Baghdad in 2004-5 under the CPA and The Embassy. I was the Senior Consultant to the Commission on Public Integrity. I like hearing how other folks are doing. We have all had our different life experiences and they can be interesting to share. Mine has involved a lot of travel and interesting service and work. How about yours? Be happy.
