Paul's Story

Workplace In June 2005 I bought a research and development company called Eltron Research & Development in Boulder Colorado. Prior to that I worked for Conoco and then ConocoPhillips for over 26 years. Conoco moved us around a lot. We have lived in a lot of different places including Houston (3 times), New Orleans, Corpus Christi, Anchorage Alaska and Dubai, United Arab Emirates on the Persian Gulf. We now live north of Boulder and I believe it is our last stop. Family My wife, Glenda, is from Tyler, Texas. We met at Texas Tech and were married in May '77. We have 3 boys and 2 girls. Sarah is our oldest. She is a lawyer for Amtrack in Washington, D.C. and she and her husband Christopher have two grandchildren (so far), Alexandra and Jonathan. Next is Andy. He is the general manager of Continental Technologies in Ponca City, OK. Our 3rd child, Emily, got a degree in Advertising/PR from TCU. She and her husband Ben had their first child, Robert, in July. They live 10 miles fro us. Our 4th child, Joey, is working on his Masters degree ni music performance (bassoon) at Rice University in Houston. Our youngest child, Mike, is a sophomore at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Both of my parents passed away in 2004 from cancer. I miss them a lot. I have 4 brothers & a sister. My oldest brother, Ralph, is a VP for Tesoro in San Antonio and has 2 kids who live in California. Steve is a lawyer in Dallas and has 4 kids. Dave has 4 kids , lives in Little Rock, Arkansas and is COO for an insurance company. Tom is a refining manager for BP in their headquarters outside of Chicago and he has 3 children. My sister Kathy lives in Pittsburgh with 1 child and is a CFO for an oncology group. Life We really enjoy the opportunity to live next to the mountains in Colorado. It ain't Texas but it may be the next best thing. We really enjoyed living in so...Expand for more
many interesting places as we were raising our children. It was fascinating living in Dubai for 4 years not only for the culture there but also because we got to travel so much (with the company paying for it too...). We have made so many good friends over the years that live all over the world. I am an incredibly fortunate guy for a zillion reasons. I couldn't ask for a better life partner than Glenda and our kids have all been a blessing. I always wanted to own my own business and I have been lucky enough to do that since '05. The only blemishes I can think of are related to my health. In May '99 I had a cardiac arrest. My heart stopped for about 10 minutes. The EMS folks were incredible and they got to me quickly and used a defribrillator (they work!) and I got some stents for my heart a few days later. Glenda has told friends that "yeah, he was dead but he's better now..." It all started when I pulled a cop over in Houston (Katy actually) because he was speeding (really). It's an amazing story. Ask me about it the next time we see each other. Even with 3 stents my heart's arteries were pretty plugged up. In April '09 I went in to the hospital in Longmont and had a quintuple bypass operation. That was pretty weird for any number of reasons. I have fully recovered from it (neat scar on the chest too) and I am in better health than I have been in for a very long time. I gave up my tobacco (ugh) and exercise a lot more. I must have a bunch of guardian angels and I believe they are exhausted so I don't think I'll be doing this again. Learnings from the heart incidents? I think there are two main ones. First, behaviors (good and bad) have effects on us all. Second, we do not have any right to be alive on this planet at all. The fact that we get to be here for even one nanosecond is an incredible gift. Don't take it for granted. Carpe Diem!
