Paul's Story

Hi High Schoolers! Since my days of wandering the hallways, daydreaming the class hours and smoking breaks out front during my senior year my life has taken me thru varied experiences and contrasts of dark times and light. Most of my 4 decades since the hippie days of H S have been spent living in the mountains at Lake Tahoe and the Island of Whidbey. Academically my senior year with you was my best. I went to Shoreline CC but didn't get my bearings till I hopped on a plane to Reno at age 22 and got hired at Harrah's the next day. That was my first time flying, my 1st real job and true independence from my youth. I learned the fine points of craps on swing shift to the sounds of BB Kings' guitar Lucille wailing in the cabaret in front of my table. I transfered to Lake Tahoe 4 years later and spent 2 more years at Harrah's before going across the street to Sahara where Elvis played out his jumpsuit days. after 5 years as a supervisor there and my love life secure with my future wife Alyce we decided to move to Whidbey Island since she was done with casino life and I was bored with skiing at Heavenly valley, riding bicycle and motorcycle during the day or water skiing. I would rather be a failed artist by that time than a successful casino operater and Alyce and I could move to Washington where she'd lived before and we could start a family in the little big house I'd been building. Well, we were unable to conceive so I began a search for my daughter who was adopted with out my knowledge back when I was 20. I found her! It took about 10 years but she had been raised with a brother who was also adopted. She graduated from the U W and seemed to be doing alright although she was unable to manage the complexities broug...Expand for more
ht on by having 2 sets of parents ie the parents who nurtured and the ones that brought her into the world. I'm hopeful that I'm a grandfather by now and may someday get a chance to experience that joie de vivre. My wife has worked at the U W career center in Mary Gates Hall the last 12 years. She loves visiting with her sister who is a Red Cross worker and seems to be at some disaster most of the time. Alyce loves collecting vintage clothes and selling them. She has a great friend in Vancouver who makes and collects corsets. They like to do shows together on the West Coast. Alyce and I share the loving and massaging of our happy dog Zeena. We have a 40 acre woods next to our tiny property where Zeena can chase rabbits to her hearts content. The acreage belongs to a long time Island resident who has the alder harvested for furniture once in a great while. She's an all black lab/rottweiller with a docked tail and smallish rottweiller body. My art interests have so far turned out according to my original dream and I have become the failed artist instead of the successful casino operator. While the failure is mostly monetary my life as an artist has been rich in the various work I've eked out. Going to galleries and museums in Europe as well as my little trips in this land is the most fun. Zeena is too big to ride in a canvas bag on the tank of my motorcycle and I still hope to get a side car for her someday and the 3 of us can camp and swim across country and do vintage clothes/art shows. But for now I will ride and dream my way back to my friends and acquaintances from Hale and other schools who I want to connect with and have good times once again! Hope your dreams come real, P K Mallett (Paul)
