Paul's Story

Greetings all! After High School (Class of June 1950)I enlisted in the Air Force and spent four years on Active Duty. During that time I did run into Ed Hamelka (Class of 1950) down at Bergstrom AFB, Texas. I have been on across both Oceans in the military. Most of my life was spent in the Transportation Industry. I worked for United Air Lines for several years; in the Traffic Department of Bendix Corporation; as a Traffic Manager in the Trucking Industry;and finally after the Trucking Company was sold and my job eliminated due to the merger, I ended up working for the United States Air Force down at Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana. I had both a Military commitment and also was in the Civil Service working for the Government. I ended up retiring from both the Military (1992) and from Civil Service. (1996) I was married in 1954 to Gail Keenan (Class of January 1954) in Chicago and we migrated to Indiana in 1956. We were blessed with seven children, all girls. Gail and I shared 52 years together...the Angels came for her on March 31, 2007. Through the years we enjoyed Camping and had done quite a bit in the summer months. The last 12 years we had parked our Travel Trailer on a Campground in Michigan on Clear Lake just west of Buchanan, Michigan. Grand kids enjoyed the swimming, campfires and cookouts. So did we!! Now my time is split up between Grand kids Athletic Programs; Fitness USA working out; the Campground in fair weather; Volunteering at the local Hospital Ronald McDonald House, Ushering out at Notre Dame for the Men's and Women's Basketball Teams; also ND Football: Volunteering at Reins of Life which is a Horseback Riding Program for Mentally and Physically Challenged kids and young adults; helping my kids where needed; some very good friends; and generally things around the homestead and...Expand for more
of course my Church and the G-Kids school functions. .....With my military background, I must tell you that I am a "Hawk". I still keep in touch with many of my Military friends and do go down to the military installation to visit them occasionally. A lot of us retirees meet once a month for Breakfast down by Grissom Air Force Base here in Indiana. When I get a chance, I have taken a military "Hop" from time to time. I do enjoy flying, particularly in Military Aircraft. I find that I spend far too much time on my computer and not enough time reading....LOL...I guess that's inherent with the times..,.Lately tho I have been reading quite a bit more. "Be Careful out there", and "Watch your Six"......Paul O. Have a sad note to add to this narative...My youngest Daughter Terri (35 years old) passed away unexpectedly on 9/5/14....leaving a family of 7 Children and husband Mike behind to grieve over her untimely loss. This is a tough one for her Dad too....(My wife Gail died in 2007}....Terri's six sisters were also devistated over loosing their youngest sister....Terri was an absolutely beautiful person....She was a graduate of Indiana University, an RN, and a friend to so many...A testimonial to her was the multitude of people who came to her showing and physically attended her funeral....she will forever be so sorely missed...if those of you who read this are a praying person, please say one for Terri and the family she left behind....and her Dad too!!!! Thanks and God Bless!!!! (Update on Terri's family, still no Mom in the home. Oldest Daughter attending Indiana University, oldest Son out on his own and in the local community working.....still five children at home. They are doing pretty well under the circumstances. Mike keeps busy at his job,Kids are all doing really well in school. 5/05/16)
