Paul's Story

First, I changed my name.(real personal call) And still can't get this site to clarify I was in the class of 1965.After high school did get serious over the course of time about education it. Did wind up with (probably also initially motivated by Vietnam) a BA, MA, MPA, JD, and attended the University of Virginia Executive Institute. The latter was very interesting since it involved consulting with newly elected officials from former communist countries on law and government in their transition to democracy. Still do some of this work with American Bar Association's Central and East European Legal Initiative as an attorney and goverment advisor. Since after high school I was among those who were going to get drafted-I wasn't rich or had any influence to avoid the draft- I wound up being a commissioned infantry officer in the US Army. Don't talk about this event in my life much but many of us who did don't talk about it and, in my case, not allowed to. I eventually got involved in politics and was Mayor Bill McNamara's (yes the same one) Chief of Staff (who I didn't go near him or his gum box)in High School for twelve years) followed by tours in a number of places as a City Manager and CEO of government agencies. Also managed to spend a lot of time teaching college in law and government as an Assistant Professor and really enjoyed teaching even albeit without the formal teaching. Got married, eventually divorced, and never had any kids. I do like to think the...Expand for more
commitment I made in High School to public service was one that I kept. Probably because of the age/economic times/tax laws, am now am forced to deal with stopping or reducing work-at least full time-and at 70 the laws make working after that a penalty or tax windfall for the government. Still could practice and continue to do some national/international consulting work. Had to work my way in High School and college so I can't say High School was very eventful for me (see my woodworking skills and deficiencies from Fuller) in the yearbook pretty much said everything about my manual skills in the future. I do still remember this very attractive English teacher (not sure why she motivated me that much and probably and would not like to ponder on it) and, for whatever reason-(again probably also the war) decided to get serious about school at the last moment. Still wonder whether high school as a whole was worth much. Had to work so never made it as part of the "in-crowd. While later in life I tried Florida for a while, both as a resident and Voting Rights Attorney for the Obama campaign, it was a bad experience and a surprise that discrimination is still alive and well in the south. Back here pondering as to where I go and and what I do next outstanding. Talk about backpacking Israel for a month but after that still the most difficult problem in my life is what to do and where to go next. But that may be solved by North Carolina !
