Paul's Story

I was born 5-31-'45 in Amittyville, L.I.,N.Y. I lived in Wantagh until 1964. It was then that I & my folks moved to NYC and we lived in Stuyvesant town on 14th str. until 1968, when we purchased a home in Bergenfield, N.J. We lived there ever since. My father passed away in 2003 and my mother died in 2007, leaving me all alone. I have considered selling the house and moving to assisted living in Cresskill, N.J., but it's pricy and I am 10 yrs younger than the average age of the people who live at Sunrise. I AM seriously planning to retire next year. I have been working since 1967, but as I said, I am old now and may retire next year. I never married, and have accomplished little. I have a severe hearing handicap that has had countless social & other consequences. After my father died, I had to take over all his responsibilities. On the passing of my mother after a long deterioration (she got to be 93), I was able to take several trips by car or train to see old places. I re-visited Wantagh in 2008, seeing my old home at 1843 Beech street for the first time in 45 years.I also saw the elementary school where I studied. I had traveled by train to Wantagh, so I did not attempt to hoof it to the high school where I had a hard time.Wantagh memories are mixed to say the least. My 2nd trip to Wantagh was by car. oute, using a program that shows every house in the entire world. I saw the school now -and I see they added a parking lot for students at the main entrance. I actually stood inside the entrance and believe I recognized the staircase. I did not however, go any further, lest I be challanged by some security guard.I spoke to some people around town, but found nobody I knew from the old days. Wantagh had not treated me fairly. I was regarded as a flake. The Lutheran church ignored me and my mother pulled me out of Sunday School. The school system regarded me as unteachable, and tried to have me put away as a freak. I HAVE found papers to that effect and the efforts of my parents to get me treated fairly. My troubles were due to the above mentioned hearing problems... I know a few people from Wantagh: Mrs. Walsh, Mrs. Kramer, Arthur Ulbricht, Gerald Scheer, Mrs. Kamitchis, Mr. Pressler (now in Florida), Bobby Garnet..., a boy named Chester (post office). I had been to Sunrise Park school, and was surprised to read that it burned down. I recall the bide-a-wee across the road from the high school. Unhappy that it's having a financial crisis now. The upstate property we purchased in 1956 has been sold in late 2003 since my father's death left us unable to manage it anymore... People used to call me "Carrot Top", but my hair is white now...
