Paula's Story

Life After high school I attended Lake Erie College (LEC) to get my BA in Equestrian Studies; after LEC haad to work at parents business, but hated it. In 1978 I joined the US Army and served for six years in Electronic Warfare. I met and married my husband Michael while we were stationed together in Arizona. We spent four years in Europe, during which I finished a Master of Science in System Management, got out of the Army and our daughter Heather was born in Stuttgart Germany (1984). We were able to travel extensively throughout Germany, and much of Great Britain (especially the north of England and Scotland). We then were stationed in El Paso, TX where our son Ian was born (December 1985). I went to work as a Math Analyst and then an Operations Research Analyst at White Sands Missile Range, NM. My job sent me to Japan, Okinawa and Korea as well as back to Germany, and all over the US. In 1990 I accepted a position working for the US Army at Intelligence Electronic Warfare Test Directorate, Operational Test Command at Fort Huachuca, AZ. My husband and I both work in the same building in jobs that require a LOT of travel. In the last year I've racked up frequent flyer miles traveling to metro DC, GA, NC, TX, and NM. Unfortunately, Michael and I don't get to travel together very often. Heather is now a sophomore in college (studying BioInformatics/ Genomics) and Ian is a high school senior (taking advanced classes in TV Production, and starting an internship at City Hall in September). We have a black Lab/Border Collie mix dog by the name of Ready who keeps us amused and entertained, while she reinforces her control over us (yes, I'm wrapped around her paw.) My father died in 1988 after a stroke caused by surgical complications, and my mother died of metastatic cancer in Jan 1996 at our home in Arizona. ildren and great in-laws. Two years ago I had back surgery, which required me giving up horse-back riding and martial arts (I was six-months away from getting a black belt in Tae Kwon Do; Heather is a third-degree Black Belt and Ian is a first-degree Black Belt). Michael and the children regularly autocross, but I gave that up as well, to prevent more wear-and-tear, but I do get to drive the race cars every once in a while. Still on my agenda is a vacation to Australia and New Zealand sometime after both children graduate with undergrad degrees. Heather went to Aus/NZ as a student ambassador while a high school freshman and loved it! School After graduating from high school I went to PGCC and got an AA with High Honors in General Studies. I just couldn't decide what I wanted to do. I then continued my education at Lake Erie College in Painesville, OH where I majored in Equestrian Studies (two years of shoveling $h*t). Along the way I had an academic term abroad, which I spent in Yorkshire working for my British Horse Society Assistant Instructors certificate. Unfortunately the best education in the world doesn't mean you can make a living in your field afterwards. In 1982 I started a Masster of Science degree in Systems Management while I was in Germany. I attended the University of Southern California academic study centers in Patch Barracks, Stuttgart-Vaihingen and Kelly Barracks, Stuttgart-Moehringen. All the Algebra and Calculus I hated in high school and undergraduate school came back to haunt me. I graduated with an MSSM in 1981 and a 3.9 GPA. Only problem class was when I was out in the field for REFORGER military exercise and I took an automatic 10% deduction for taking the mid-term late. I've since taken graduate courses in advanced statistics, numerous military schools, and am working towards certification in Software Engineering. Not too shabby for the tomboy who spent more time at the barn than studying!
