Paula's Story
I am happier in this moment of my life than I have ever been. Having spent a whole lot of years feeling like the odd one out it feels good to feel good.
I am retired from my first career as a Hospital Administrator. What better place for a crippled woman to work? After all, after having spent my entire life as a health care consumer, I already spoke the language. Working for ten years at Samaritan (now Banner Health) I found myself on the short end of an internal argument and looking for a job.
The opportunity presented to do something I had always wanted - be involved in politics. I helped run a campaign for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. We ran a bipartisan campaign and lost in the primary. Primaries are not known for their love of bipartisanship.
Back to the old line of work, this time in beautiful Cottonwood, AZ. Great job - lousy place to live as a single woman.
Four years later, I acknowledged the call of my heart that I had attempted to ignore for years. I made plans to enter the seminary and become an ordained Lutheran pastor. Taking a two-year leave of absence, I planned to move to Iowa for studies.
The problem with plans is...Expand for more
that life gets in the way. I needed some body tune-up work done before I could go and had surgery in late March of 1994 to re-replace my elbow joint. There was a surgical accident and I had nerve damage which left me unable to consider living alone. Seminary was out of the question.
In 2008, years of attempting to reconstruct my right leg ended with an above knee amputation. I have a wonderful prosthetic leg and very little stops me from doing what I wish. Not what I wanted but then, we deal with what life gives us. Correct?
It has been a long road from there to here. I have however come to believe that I have a story to tell and that it does not require the ordained ministry to tell my story. I am now a speaker and teacher. I have been blessed to be invited to speak to groups all over the country. I run a website called: thegimpygal.com, where I blog and keep in touch with people I have met.
So, my life is great! Happiness is sometimes a fleeting thing. But peace of mind and heart are steady forces even in the tough times - especially in the tough times.
I spend time with great friends, a loving family, and a gracious God. How lucky can a girl be?!
