Paula's Story
Life
Updated 8/31/07
Married Roger in 1995. We have 2 girls, born 4/10/99 and 11/29/00. Our third child, Traes, died in my womb at around 10 weeks, but we didn't officially know until 1/21/03 via ultrasound. On 1/30/03, I had a D&E to remove him. He was due 8/03/03. It is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I wouldn't wish a miscarriage on my worst enemy. It is too heart wrenching.
Our family attends Petra Christian Fellowship in New Holland where my husband and I serve on various church ministries. I am an avid Christian novel reader, sing in our church choir, and am pursuing a dream through taking ballet lessons for the first time in my life. As of 4/02/07, I have been taking lessons in my pointe shoes. I am starting my 4th year of ballet lesons and have performed in 4 "Nutcracker" productions at EPAC with the Laurel Dance Company.
I am a stay at home mom and a very pt piano teacher. In 2005, I started working for Shady Maple's Banquet Center as a Banquet waitress. I have added handling the dessert bar for the 3rd Smorg and prepping dishes for the Dishwashers to my skills.
I am a regular volunteer in my daughters' school, Brecknock Elementary. This past week, I was in the AM Kindergarten room as an aide of sorts. I really enjoyed it. When I told the kids I wouldn't be back next week, they all gave me a hug! For the past 3 years, I have appeared as "Mother Goose" on K's Nursery Rhyme day and I plan to do it again this year. I am also in my 10th year of volunteering with the Garden Spot 4-H club, which my oldest, Tacey, is finally old enough to join.
The sad news of 2007 is that I lost my dad on 4/20. He had been battling Parkinson's disease for over 20 years. On 4/03/07, he fell, didn't hurt himself, but wouldn't let me put him in his chair so I called the New Holland Ambulance and had them transfer him to LGH. He was in LGH for a week, and then we transferred him to Audobon Villa in Lititz. He was gone in 10 days. I was there when he took his final breath. Evem though I was there, and he was 80 years old, it was/is still a shock to the system that he is actually, finally gone. I know he is in heaven with a whole new body, but sometimes I wish my healthy dad was still here. There is stuff I want to tell him or ask him and I can't.
Right now, I am contemplating a new career. I so love being in the school and working with the kids that I am tying to find a way to get paid for being there instead of volunteering. I just wish that I would have known I would have enjoyed this kind of work 20 years ago when I was going to college!
School
Graduated in 1987. Was in the chorus all my years at GS. I was also in GSPA and performed on stage...Expand for more
one time as a village mama in "Fiddler on the Roof." I was an avid fan of our soccer team, cheering for them (from the stands) in 2 state competitions my sophomore and junior years. I pursued the academic college prep courses route. I was a class representative my junior and senior years. I was a good student, almost never missing the Honor Roll or receiving an Honor Pass. Outside of school, I took piano lessons, was a Girl Scout, and a member of the Garden Spot 4-H Club.
College
I was a commuter whlle attending MU. My address was the SMAC. If I didn't have a class, that was where you could find me. My sophomore year, I became involved with Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship, and was a Bible Study Leader my senior year. I am a member of the 1989 Fall Pledge Class of Delta Phi Eta sorority where I served as the Committee Chairman for Fundraising and Ammending the Sorority Constitution. I was an avid fan of the Marauder Football team, cheering from the stands at about every home game. If the game was away, I listened to it on the radio. I graduated cum laude in 1991 with a B.S. in Business Administration/Management. One thing I regret - I never ate at the Sugar Bowl. That's like a sin or something, isn't it?
Workplace
During summers in college I worked for then, Ford New Holland as a Service Parts order taker. It was a lot of fun. I phone flirted with men from Maine to Virginia. When I started, I was 18 and none of the guys I talked with would believe. I had such a mature sounding voice. It was fun while it lasted.
Went to college so I wouldn't be someone's secretary, but in May of 1992, I became Stoltzfus Enterprises, Ltd.'s, located in Elverson, Secretary/receptionist/bookkeeper. I enjoyed the book and computer work but not really answering the phones. Workded their until fall of 1997 and decided to stay at home.
In February of 1998, I began teaching my nephew piano. It was a test run. I enjoyed it and in the fall of that year, I had 10 students. After a break of several years, I am teaching again. This time for a homeschool co-op. Right now I have 3 students.
For the past 2 years I have also been a banquet waitress for Shady Maple's Banquet Center. Another job I really like on most days. I work with great people which just makes going to work all the more fun. The other great benefit of the job is I can decide when and how often I work. That is the best part. Since most banquets are on Saturdays or weeknights, I don't need to get a babysitter because dad is home. The pay isn't too shabby for what I do, I think.
That's it for now, although I wish I got paid for all of my volunteer work I do. But then, that defeats the purpose, huh?
