Peggy's Story

Does anyone ever write this..".high school really sucked". For those of us who were really shy and insecure most days were a challenge. I never felt as if I 'fit in' any particular group. Not to say that there weren't some good times...especially summer dances and hanging out at the Rec. That being said, Taft College was a better experience and I definitely came out of my shell during my years at UCSB and explored my 'wild side' for a time. I graduated in '69 and headed to Cal Poly and got my teaching credential. My last quarter at UCSB I settled down somewhat and met my future husband and we have been married and lived in Modesto (not my dream location) for 41 years. I taught school for a short time and then became a 'stay-at-home' Mom with 2 children. I was always very involved with their school and sports activities and with our church and helping in our business. Our 40 year old son, Brent, graduated from Westmont College and lives in Danville with his wife and 3 children and is a software architect. Our 38 year old daughter, Erin, graduated from Cal Poly and is married to the Senior Pastor of a large community church here in Modesto and they have 3 children. my grandchildren. I go once a week to Danville to help with my youngest grandchildren. The last 15 years have been a challenge. My husband, Brian, was paralyzed from the waist down after unsuccessful surgery to remove a spinal tumor. He is an amazing, wonderful man with a positive attitude, strong faith in God, and a strong will. After about 6 months of rehab, he went back to running our commercial real estate company, Velthoen Associates, which has been our livelihood for over 30 years. We love taking trips in our motor home which is custom designed to accommodate Brian's wheel chair. He drives using hand controls, which takes lots of faith on my part. Our favorite spots are the central coast for wine tasting and the ocean, which I love. We've gone as far as Canada and really enjoy going to Montana to visit friends. For those of you who remember my parents...my dad passed away in 1990 shortly after they moved to Modesto. Sadly, my mom died at age 89 in March, 2011, from complications after emergency hernia surgery. Life brings many surprises and the need to be flexible on our part and trust God to work things out. I have been blessed with a wonderful family and faithful friends and I'm truly thankful.
